I am a newb with scopes. I am seriously looking at the Vortex HS-T

I just bought a Ruger Precision Rifle.

I want to shoot out 500M.

Do you guys have any feedback on the Vortex?

Would you choose 6-24 X 50 or 4-16 X 44 for shooting out towards 500M

Also would you guys prefer a MOA or MRAD Reticle?

Greats scopes for the price point. Personally I would go for the higher magnification version, I always like to have more and not need it, than need it and not have it. MRAD is what I use, not for any particular reason. The first scope I bought was in mils so I stuck with it.

I did a little review a while back on the 4-16 version. Great little scope! However, as others stated above, I'd go for the higher magnification.

They are decent scopes with poor glass. I would go with the 6-24 power.

If its your first scope go mil-mil.

You don't want to end up like me, super invested in MOA when it seems to be dying off slowly.

Check out Sightrons new s-tac 4-20x50.

I recall one hungry teacher told us in a precision clinic to try and test drive the scope in the store if possible. See if you can estimate an object or building 300 to 400 away and look through the glass. Is it clear, can you make out details, any aberrations, move the magnification 10 to 15 to 24. Well I did not do any of these with the x24 HS-T and in the field, if you're like me, my eyes...well they're old..lol and I ended up getting a Sightron.

That scope will serve you fine out to more then 500 yards. We used to shoot out past 1000 yards with a Bushnell Elite 3200 fixed 10. Although I don't currently own any Vortex scopes I had the PST's series and glass was excellent, great support online and excellent build quility. I will say Im not an "super elite tactical sniper like some guys on this board"..lol but I enjoy long range coyote and varmint shooting here on the prairies.

Hmmm....me thinks moa is not "dying off".

Go post another one, bro.

Some american companys are keeping it around, and I'm thankful for it.

But other companys are only offering their highend tactical scopes with mrad adjustments. Bushnell and Steiner come to mind.

In the 5 years since i got into precision shooting there has been a massive shift for whats available for rifle scopes.

I have the HST 6-24×50 on my vanguard 223. It's been great so far but I've only shot it out to 300yds .Scope tracks well moa hash marks are easy to use .I prefer to use the turrets though. I also have the same scope in the PST version. My next purchase is going to be a S3 10-50×56 though for my new T3 varmint. Not sure which reticle yet though.

They're not very good glass, and a poor feature set for the rpr.
A mil/mil ffp pst would be a much better choice for the rifle. A 3.5x21 bushnell dmr would be better yet.
And yes, Moa is a disadvantage, most rapid wind formulas, wind calls, etc. are in mils. Moa scopes also tend to have less resale value.
