Hi guys. Was hoping you guys could help me make a decision between some Vortex glass. After reading this you might think the decision is simple but I'm very undecided at the moment and uneducated on optics.

So I'm looking at getting either the Vortex Razor HD or the Fury HD with built in rangefinder (link at bottom for both). When I buy things that I see myself using for many many years, I tend to go all in my decision in terms of quality. My plan is to use these for hunting and the occasional range trip. At the moment I don't currently own a pair of binos but I do currently have a standalone rangefinder which is not helping my decision. My thinking is if I pull the trigger on the Fury's is that I could either sell my current rangefinder or hand it off to one of my hunting pals.

This where my lack of knowledge about optics comes in. See if I were to get the Fury's, would I be missing out on quality of glass and different protections that come with the Razor's? I understand that both have a 10x42 magnification but just looking at the pictures of them the Fury's seem shorter which makes me (I'm probably wrong) think I wouldn't be able to see as far. Overall would be I missing out on features going with one over the other (other than the built in rangefinder)? Would I miss out on image quality going one way or another?

Any input, opinions on Vortex, stories, or help in general would be really appreciated.

Thanks guys,

Kev :)

If you already have the standalone rangefinder, and even if you didn't, I'd recommend the Razors. I've heard that the Fury's have about Viper Glass quality. Now I don't have any first hand knowledge of that. I do however have firsthand knowledge of Viper's vs. Razor's as I have Razor's and my dad has Viper's. In a heartbeat I'd say the Razor's are better glass, clearer, brighter and a wider field of view. I only had one issue with all my Vortex stuff and it was a simple fix to send off to Vortex and they sent it back to me quickly.

If I were you, I'd definitely buy the Razors, then buy a good standalone rangefinder if you aren't content with yours right now. I believe Vortex only offers like a 3 year warranty on electronics, so if in the future the rangefinder in the Fury does quit, you're stuck with a very expensive pair of Viper binos.

Just my 2 cents. If you've got any other specific questions, let me know.

I had the Viper HD's and they were great. I just sold them to get the Fury HD's. The Razors have better glass, but its not a quantum leap. I would way rather have a built-in range finder.

The way I see it is opposite to the way jessekf sees it. There is no 'right' answer but my view is that in order to combine the scope and the rangefinder some compromise is likely and that compromise is likely to be in optical quality. For me I have chosen to invest in a reasonable rangefinder ( Sig Kilo 2000 ) and for tactical style rifles excellent thru very good thru to very good value FFP glass ( S+B PM II, Kales 624i, Razor II HD, NF ATACR and Bushnell DMR II's) and, for my F-Class rifles excellent (S+B) and good (Vortex Golden Eagle ) glass.

Agree 100%. I went with a good rangefinder in the SIG Kilo 2000 as well and then Very good glass in a Vortex Razor AMG, Razor spotting scope, and Razor binos.

I think he is talking about Razor HD binoculars, not the Razor HD riflescopes. 10X42 in any series of binos let you see the same distance, you see no further because one bino is longer than the other, There may be slight variations in field of view, or clarity, but with either bino you can look at the moon, or the stars. Personally, if you have only one pair of binos, I would suggest the Fury, get everything you need in one package, and as long as you remember your binos, you won't forget your range finder.

And all Vortex gear comes with the VIP warranty, doesn't matter if it is electronic or not, everything is covered, for life.

Hmm I didn't realize this, I thought I had read somewhere that electronics weren't covered for life but I could easily be wrong. Might be worth a call to Vortex to make sure. that being said, I think OP will be happy with whatever Vortex product he buys, they've been nothing less than outstanding for me.

I have the ranger rangefinder 1500 and I dropped off the bench and the lens cracked sent it to vortex they sent me a brand new one no question asked brought that rangefinder when it first came out so had it for a bit still no question asked
