Hey,

looking for opinions on a vortex scope and rings for a ruger american hunter in 6.5CR I would like to stay between $500 - $800. I probably wont be shooting beyond 500yrds ( Hunting/Target shooting).

Thanks guys

It doesn't have to be per-say, I just like the brand ( warranty and CCFR support ). They seem to have more options for any budget. I'm torn between a diamond back tactical or Viper.

I have a Diamondback HP 4-16x42 (only vortex product I own) on 6.5 swede. I like the optics of the scope but not so much the controls. I would compare the glass quality to a Nikon Monarch if not slightly better. The Monarchs have way better controls though. Too bad they don't make em anymore.

Maybe my eyesight is better or Vortex has improved the Diamondback line since I dabbled in it, but I comprehensively disliked the one I used to own. Only scope I managed to break and glass was poor. I've never gone back: When I buy a Vortex now it's Viper or up.

Because of the hunting element, make sure the low end of your variable range reaches 2-4x: while one can use a magnification topping 10x for target shooting, one will be severely handicapped hunting with high magnification unless one is only hunting woodchuck/gopher beyond 100y.

Viper over venom any day of the week...the glass is far superior on the viper compared to the venom. If you can spend the $800 on the glass then do it...don't cheap out on sub-par glass and parts.
