OK, I have been using mostly Leupold scopes for many years now. I do have a couple of other brands, but it seems I usually end up buying Leupold.

But I'm open to change..... What about these Vortex scopes? Seems like there's a lot of people banging their drum. Are they really as good as everyone says? As good or better than Leupold?

Which model do you recommend I look at for 50/50 hunting and range shooting out to say 500 yds?

I like the 4-16x50 Viper PST FFP. I guess time will tell if it holds up like my Leupies.

It tracks well and the glass is good. The zero stop is handy and the scope centered well mechanically, both elev. and windage. You can by better or worse I suppose.

I'm a Leupold guy through and through.

To be honest I've never looked through a Vortex, but...........I keep reading about these scopes ####ting the bed and the fact that people are happy that they exchange them over the counter.

I'd be happy if I never had to use the warranty.

Agreed! It nice to know their warranty is rock solid but from the post on this site it sounds like they have a 50%+ failure rate. This alone has stopped me from purchasing a Vortex. OP if you get one let us know, I would really like a 1x4 for my AR.

Stick with Leupold. I've had to use Vortex warranty twice in the last 2 years.

Leupold warranty- never needed.

Warranty is close to on par with Leupold, quality, not even close.

Had 2 vortex
The crossfire did not even made it to the rifle, reticule was at 45 deg. Angle.
The viper pst lasted about a year until all kind of debris were flying inside between shots and the eye piece came loose.

Even with all this, I still hesitate if my next build will wear.a
ATARC or a razor HD gen2 4.5-27

I think you're vastly over-estimating based on "the squeakiest of wheels" idea. Happy customers don't have nearly as much reason to respond.

Everyone has a budget line. I wouldn't buy a VX-I or a Crossfire for my guns. But the viper series have always been solid for me, and I love my Razor.

I've used vortex optics exclusively for the past . . . five years now? Could be six.

Have you had to use there warranty? Any issues? Do you own any of their 1x4 if so how do you like it? Looking for honest input.

I owned the Viper PST 1-4 for years, and really liked it. However, I had the opportunity to get a Razor 1-6, so I sold the Viper.

The Razor 1-6 is a heavier scope, but amazing glass and a stellar reticle.

I prefer low magnification magnified optics over red-dots, acogs, etc. With a good throw lever on top you can adjust your magnification quickly without coming off the gun. Plus you'll find they have way more eye relief than most fixed power military style optics.

This is an older review, but I did it shortly after getting the razor:

Well, I'm sitting at a 66% return for warranty ratio... Not the cheapies either....

Here's the Vortex story as I see it. They are made in foreign countries, China, Korea, Japan, etc. The cost to produce there is lower than here in North America. That's one of the major reasons their prices are so attractive. Also, they pack their optics full of features that make also make them attractive to the consumer. Then their warranty is so attractive, and it is able to be offered due to their low cost of production. There are two ways to look at the warranty. Option A: Vortex trusts their product so well they are guaranteeing it for life. Issues will be few and far between, with little replacement. Option B: Vortex trusts their success/fail ratio enough that they are able to sell a product with this warranty knowing full well that scopes will fail but since they are selling enough at a certain profit margin they can afford to replace the product "no questions asked". IMO their stance is option B. I bought Leupold instead of Vortex. I knowingly paid more for a similar product, and it did have slightly less features. These features were not of great importance to me (illumination, zero stop) so it didn't impact my decision. This is my opinion, based on quite a bit of research. This is why my rifle wears a Mark 4 instead of a PST.

I returned 4 out of 5 of my vortex crap...

Thats why I dont run them anymore.

PST 1-4 RMA
2nd PST 1-4 RMA
Razor RMA
SPARC RMA

Yeah Im done....

Opinions eh?

I still havent seen a vortex pst go down. ive seen a few non-mark 4 leupolds go down.

final opinion: focus on proper equipment over brand names. Pretty much every north american optics company other than US optics has glass from asia. what ever brand your chinese glass scope wears doesnt really matter.
