Do you think it's a waste to pull a cheap Bushell 3-9 scope off a Savage Model 11 and put on a better Vortex scope?

Or should I be investing in a better rifle?

The roughness of the bolt movement on the Savage Model 11 already bugs me.

But maybe I should save my money and use the Savage for now. I'm a brand new hunter.

You will be hard pressed to find a more accurate rifle than your savage 11 has potential to be. But they do lack in fit/finish and overall panache. First thingbi do with those pkg scopes is tear them off as well as the cheap rings and put better rings and glass. If your looking for a rifle that will just get the job done every time without any issues the savage is a good rifle for the job. If you want a rifle that gives you the fizz and the savage doesnt do it for yah replace it. Just understand that upgrading will not get you more accurate ( likely) you wont be paying for performance but you will end up with a " nicer " rifle.

My honest advice for guys serious about the shooting/hunting is to spend as much as you can justify in the glass.

Cheap rifle can shoot well. They can all be made to shoot. Glass cannot get any better, can not be upgraded and will be the determining factor in hitting what you see.

I’d go a little better than a vortex personally. Your mag range is great. 2000 in glass is not too much on a 600 dollar rifle that shoots under 1moa.

Thanks for the reply. It makes a lot of sense. I should probably save my money for now and use the Savage with the better scope until I hunt some more.

Bought a Savage 111 as my beginner rifle 15 years ago. Took off the Bushnell and added a Leopold VX1. 13 big game animals have been taken with it so far. No issues.
