Vortex Viper: initial impressions

There have been a few people asking about Vortex scopes lately with not a lot of feedback, so I thought I would toss this out if anyone is interested.

I finally received my Vortex yesterday after about a 4 week backorder. I think it was worth the wait. My initial impressions of this scope are very good. On opening the box I was met with a very appealing 2-7X32 laying on a fancy little soft cloth. Wonder who they are trying to emulate?

The scope comes with a set of caps, good quality plastic, with see through covers, and nice strong bungees joining them. On further inspection the first two things that stand out are the rubber eye cup on the back of the eyepiece, and the very wide multiplier ring. The ring moves very smoothly, has a pointer with a red index that shows the power setting without having to lower the scope.

The multiplier should be very easy to move with gloves on, and the rubber covered eyepiece will definitely reduce the sting of any scope "bite". My only thought was that the pointer arm could possibly get broken off if something were to get between it and the scope body. The way it is designed though, I think it would be difficult if not impossible to get something strong enough to snap the pointer off, wedged between it and the scope body.

The next treat was when I removed the adjustment turret caps. They are both O-ring sealed, and have easily read, 1/4 minute, audible click, turrets beneath. As an extra touch, the turrets are easily zeroed by pulling up and turning back to 0.

The eyepiece is fast focus and works flawlessly. It has no locking ring, and I guess it could move out of position, but there is decent friction holding it in place.

The view through the scope was clear and crisp right to the edges. Compared to a VX lll and a variX ll, it was just a tiny bit brighter than the ll and every bit the equal of the lll. Not quite an apples to apples comparison as both my Leupolds are 40MM objectives. (3X9 and 3.5X10, set at 7 to compare).

My VX lll has a Boone and Crockett reticle. The Vortex has it's BDC. The Leuply is the nicer of the two, with it's barretts, as opposed to the mil dot style on the Viper. It is a fairly fine reticle, good for long distance, the jury is out on visibility in dark woods or failing light. I think I might want a thicker one for DG as well. I don't know how fast you would pick up this fine reticle in a snap situation.

Mounted on a Ruger Hawkey African it fits quite nicely.

Eye relief is quite generous, and I had absolutely no problems with "scope bite"during todays session. Adjustments were positive, from the get go and did not drift after the first shot. The rifle needed a little tweak and the shooter definitely could use a tweak, but the scope worked flawlessly, and helped produce this.

All in all I am very impressed with the scope so far. Hopefully I will not have to test their No fault lifetime warranty. Hope this helps someone.

Cheers.
