Anyone have any experience with the viper pst 2 5-25X50?
I’m looking at dropping one of these on a savage elite 6.5 Creedmoor.
My goal is to go 1000-1500 yards with it and I hear good things about this optic. I just have no experience with vortex. Any input or recommendations would be appreciated.

Good scope, good glass, good warranty, great price point.

Are there better scopes? Sure...

Depends on you budget. The next step up to a Razor is even better, but at a price tag of about double.

I personally did not like mine and resold it quickly.
Replaced it with a NF NXS and am very happy with the switch.

If you are plinking, simply hitting the gong at long distances and not PRS competing (although NF NXS works well in NSCC competing) the NF is much better than the viper for not that much more.

Vortex will have a TON of features for the price, and if you're into PRS you'll want that FFP reticle.
NF NXS is plain in features, just a very nice glass and rock solid turrets, no more no less.

As a reference my 3 precision rifles sport : Razor gen 2 4.5-27 FFP and mil, NF ATACR 5-25 FFP and mil, NF NXS 3.5-15 SFP and mil.
And the NXS has very comparable glass to the Razor, the ATACR is a nice step above in glass compared to the razor.

Edit : Btw you can find lightly used NXS's for 1700-1800$ on the EE, making it very close to new PST gen 2 price territory.

I just picked up a new strike eagle 5-25 ffp (came out 3ish months ago) for $1050. According to others the glass is approximately the same as the pst and it comes in a 34mm tube. Would be worth looking into

For 1000-1500 yard shooting you want a scope that holds zero and tracks precisely.

Scopes that do that are not necessarily the most expensive ones.

The scopes that do that in my experience are NightForce, SWFA, Bushnell LRHS, Sightron III series (poor mans Night Force) is very good as well.

I do have one Vortex 4x16 PST that has held zero and tracks well enough, the most important thing for small groups at distance (IBS target) is the ability to hold zero. It hasn't failed yet after 1000+ rounds sitting on a braked 300WM tactical rifle.

Most of the features of the new Strike Eagle > PST 2 but Vortex was quoted as saying the glass is of lesser quality. 31 Mils vs 20, 34mm tube vs 30, locking turrets vs not.
Glass may be more comparable to the 1st gen PST that I assume you are referring to, which is definitely a step behind the PST gen 2. But I haven't seen the new Strike Eagle so maybe I shouldn't comment. They list it as having XD glass but not the same XR coatings and no illumination.

You can sometimes find the gen 2 for $1100 used which is a pretty good deal. Its a great scope for the money.
The bushnell elite tactical and DMR lineups are good and can be had well under 1k and 1500 respectively.
Delta Stryker HD is an excellent option for slightly more money, has better glass, excellent turrets and tracking.
I haven't seen the new NXS in person but the older 8-32 models didn't impress me that much. I'm sure the newer ones are better and have great mag range options.
Some people will say the Athlon is a good alternative but I haven't used one.
I have a couple of Arken scopes and I am quite happy with them for the money, glass might be a touch lesser than that of the PST 2 but i need more time behind both to better compare before I write up a review.

At the end of the day the PST gen 2 is a great scope that will exceed the needs of most people. One area it may lack is adjustment range. I think I have 14 mils left on my 308 & PST gen 2 with a 20 moa mount....
Tracking > glass in my opinion but nice glass is always, well ... nice.

Ok thanks for the input everyone. So many optics out there and I had just liked this gen 2, but I guess I should keep my options open. Always found it hard to pick a scope as they all look nice inside the store, but the true test comes once it’s bolted on.
I am willing to go plus a few hundred on that sticker price if it gets me something better.
Thanks.

You can always play with the turrets, compare specs and features, read reviews but glass quality is best compared side by side.

Good luck in your search

Is it a plinking rifle, bench rifle, PRS rifle, etc?

As stated above, the toss up is 'better glass' or 'better reticle' with more information.

I prefer the Vortex EBR-C7 (mrad) over the basic mil cross hatches in lots of others (nightforce, bushnell, Leupold, Nikon etc etc) and would give up a few % in the glass quality for more 'information' in the 'mid-high end' glass market scopes. Depends what you require, more information, or even better glass.. if its better glass I would save double what you initially figure and go all out.

***I don't shoot competitions (other then with a camera), but I do enjoy training shooting off a bench and PRS stages***

Well I’m mostly gonna be shooting from prone as there really ain’t many ranges here with those distances. As for competitions I’d love to get in to that, but again not much out here for that either. That being said I’d rather buy the optic once and use it in the future if I ever do decide to travel and get in to competitions. This rifle/optic will never be used for hunting, just long shoots on paper and steal. I agree with you about the information, I want all that for sure. Apparently this vortex pst 2 has a nice crosshair setup when it’s illuminated, but than again I’ve never seen one in person. Thanks for the info, the hunt continues haha.
