I was contemplating buying this scope in Second Focal Plane as my first scope for a 308 rifle. But I just realized they only come in MOA, and I would rather get a MIL scope since my head works in CM and Meters. So calculating 1 Mil at 100 meters = 10cm is much simpler for me.

To get MRAD scope i would have to pay 100 dollars more for the First Focal Plane option. But ive read that when you are zoomed sometimes is hard to see the reticle. or that when you are zoomed in, The reticle lines cover too much of your target.

I would like to use this scope for both target shooting and probably hunting in the future.

Is FFP worth the 100 dollars extra? Does it cause any of the problem mentioned in this scope?

Let me know what you think!
Thanks!

:D

Reticle and target stay the same in relation to each other through out the magnification range, but yes the reticle will appear small at minimum power but with illumination you can see it well enough. I shoot FFP exclusively on all my precision rifles and miss it when I go hunting as my hunting rifles carry SFP scopes.

I haven't bought into the FFP fad yet, I do own a couple scopes that are FFP but I find that if I'm shooting far enough that I need to use the holdovers I'm at max magnification anyway so the reticle is correct.
If they were the same price I'd say go FFP but I don't like to get F'd just because it's the latest and greatest fad. It doesn't cost them any more to make a scope in FFP than it does to make one in SFP, it's just etching the reticle on a different piece of glass inside. They just charge more because it's new and everyone thinks it will make them shoot better so they'll pay extra for it.

Illumination is also not really needed for anything unless you're shooting right till last light or you're using a lower magnification scope and doing some run and gun using it more like a dot sight. It's nice to have but I find that I very rarely use it on my scopes.

Front Focal Plane reticles are not a "fad". It's the correct place for any type of variable magnification mil/moa holdover system.

But generally, the good thing about this hobby is you can spend your money on whatever you want and nobody, but you, should really care what you're using.

I'm with CR5. It might be a useful option, but it doesn't cost 1 cent more to make the scope that way, it's all hype and profit gouging that's driving the prices.

Also, if I actually need to use the MRAD marks, chances are, I'm at max magnification anyhow and would have done just as well with SFP.

I use my sfp between min and max. So I would use a ffp version the same. Sometimes for things like spotting your buddies miss it's helpful to not be zoomed in all the way. Better field of view etc. It would be nice if the price range was exactly the same though.

Thanks for all the replies, I ended up buying the Viper PST Gen II 5-25x50 FFP (MRAD).

I was going for the 3-15x44 but I found a nice deal for the 5-25x50 ($1350 final price with tax and delivery).

With Vortex Precision Match Rings and Defender Caps ($1596 final price with tax and delivery).

The only thing I will be missing is the 3x and 4x power but I gain powers from 16x to 25x plus a bigger front lens.

Also the FFP will be great since I dont think I will be using the 25x too often, so been able to range and use hold overs at any power will be very beneficial.

Good price. Where did you pick it up from?

The SAPRL got a couple of 5-25s PST IIs to give away at matches.

For the price they are a great scope and I was impressed with the glass and the reticle is great.

You got a pretty screaming deal on that package.
