Vortex Viper scope for .223

I was thinking of buying the Vortex viper Scope 6.5-20 for my .223. However, I was wondering which objective lens diameter size to take: either 44MM or 50MM. 50 MM is about 100$ more.

Is there a big difference in image clarity between the two sizes or is it not enough to notice?

There are several Viper scopes with different reticles and depending on what is within your comfort zone you may want to consider some of the options. I've looked at quite a few scopes recently and one of the scopes that stands out in the Viper line for the 223 is the Viper PST 4-16 x 50 with the EBR 1 reticle. I think that it is available in MRAD or MOA in the First Focal Plane.

There are Vipers available with the Second Focal Plane and they are generally cheaper. The drawback is that one would have to shoot at full power to obtain the correct subtensions for bullet drop in the reticle. To get all the subtension right at different powers means that the bullet path needs to be worked out at each power level, and some would consider this a chore to do so. This is not an issue with a FFP scope.

Vipers are also available in different power levels and one may not require the highest power - scopes that they make to get good performance.

The 50mm lens will let in the same amount of light at 20x zoom as the 44mm lens will at 17.6x zoom. That's the advantage with the bigger lens, more light. The disadvantage is a more expensive and bigger scope which could compromise your cheek weld depending on your rifle.

That's no longer an issue.
Android app Strelok + (the paid version) is able to compute the point of impact at any magnification.
 
I have the 6.5-20 with 50mm and the clarity is ok for thr price but it has very poor eye relief, personally I wouldn't get another. If you up your budget the 6x24 vortex hst is a much better choice.
 
I have the Vortex 6.5x20x44 on my HK SL8 in 223. Shoots 1 MOA for me with handloads so it seems to be working well enough for me. Went with the 44mm vice the 50mm to lower the mounting.

Good to know that Android has a ballistic software application that can predict the bullet path throughout the power range range where subtension needs to be determined for best results. As mentioned in my earlier post a scope with second focal plane has to have the subtension worked out for each power setting. The subtension are correct for the maximum power range (only).
 
I have the 4-16x50mm Vortex Viper PST FFP, illuminated EBR-1 in mrad/mrad, zero stop, on a Rem 700 .308. It is an excellent scope and low Burris tactical rings will work although I have medium Leupy QDs on a EGW 20 MOA base.

The glass is good, the .1 mrad clicks accurate and the FFP has lightened the mental math load. I recommend it.
