I played with one down at Shot, and only finally got around to wrapping up the video. I was a little cagey about this unit to start with, because I have used a wide variety of range-finders and am pretty damn picky. (I got to the point where I would only ever buy a Leica or a Leupold)

But this was very cool. The display is a huge point for me, and the vortex one did exactly what I needed it to. The angle compensator without the silly ballistics is a good choice. (I already have a BC, and the one in my rangefinder will never be as good)

Take a look!

I think I'd probably get rid of the belt clip. But its very nice in the hands and definitely worth considering.

Vortex is listing a $550 MSRP, which makes me think they'll probably retail for the $460 kind of mark. Considering a leupold with inclinometer is pushing $570 I'm curious to see what happens with the Ranger.

They're running off that same CR2 that is so popular in the leupolds and leicas.

Now: if you believe leupold and leica, they say that battery is valid for 30,000-40,000 hits. Yes, thats thirty thousand. I have a leica, and I've used it for 2 years, and have never replaced the battery in it. But I wonder how they get their numbers.

That being said, bushnells use the same CR2. So maybe its just a question of circuitry as to which units burn out faster. I know some of the bigger ones use CR123's same as my flashlight and NVD. But I don't have any time spent with those. (Think its the bushnell elite 1600 and their fusion binos)

I would hope, vortex would be putting something substantial in their rangefinder. Their new razor red-dot has a crazy long battery life as one of its features, so it is something their thinking about. But hard to say until you use one for an extended time-frame.

We'll have to wait to the summer gopher-slaughter to get some field tests I guess!
