Looking at purchasing a low power variable VX2 1-4 or VX3 1.5-5, was wondering if anyone can comment on real world differences for hunting. I own a VX2 2-7 that has served me very well and I am trying to decide if it's worth stepping up to VX3 level.

I own both and the VX3 is a little brighter/sharper but not enough to make a lick a of difference in any hunting situation I've ever encountered. I am sure the hairsplitters will show up any minute and say that the VX3 will give you 5 extra minutes of light at dusk, but trust me, if you can't see it in the VX2 you're not going to see it in the VX3. Target work is a whole other animal, but for hunting the VX2 is more than enough,

I was thinking about starting this exact thread as I am trying to decide between these two scopes and the VX-R. I plan to buy one around Christmas and I am undecided which will serve me best. I am leaning towards the VX-2 now as it is much cheaper. It has a wider field of view than the VX-3 which will be useful as I am planning on mounting it on bush gun. Then again the firedot reticle on the VX-R would be quick for close-up action. Too many decisions! Thanks for the insight Patrick.

Phinton81 is giving you some good advice. I have a VX1 and several VX3's. The glass on the VX3(1.5-5) is very, very good and it does give extra sharpness and birghtness, thus the reason I have several of them. Having said that you wouldn't go wrong picking the 1-4X. I have the "shotgun" version(VX1) with the "HEAVY" plex that REALLY stands out in thick bush. This makes fast shots on game easier than using a regular plex and I recommend it highly. (Also save a few $)

I've got a pile of VX3s and earlier variants, and probably less than a dozen 11 series scopes. The VX11s are a lot of scope for the money, and for the "set it and forget it" hunter the money saveings may be worth while.

On the other hand, the optical difference is definitely there, and coin slotted adjustments seem pretty bush league in this day and age. The adjustments on the new VX 3s are more positive, the VX11s tend to be a little lazy. Time spent dialling turrets leaves me little patience for adjustments that get there eventually.

After a while, a guy starts questioning whether the few bucks saved was really worth it. For me, now I'd just rather spend the extra little money and be done with it.

I believe the new VX-2 has finger click adjustments and other improvements over the VX-II line. They are different scopes if I'm not mistaken.

They do have the finger adjustments on the new ones, but the street price differential is even closer. It makes it even easier to say screw it for a couple extra bucks. Which is what I do.

Well, after much deliberation I decided to go with a VX-2. I couldn't justify the price jump to vx-3 and I also liked the wider FOV offered in the vx2 model. thanks for all the info folks,
