I stumbled across a vz 52/57 online and haven't found much out about it. Word guns refers to it as the VZ-58's predecessor, and that most of them were sold off as surplus. Anyone have any experience with these? Anyone know what one is worth in good shape?

I would guess that $300 for a good price, $400 for a fair price for guns in good cond.
Most are in good condition as they seemed to have been re-barreled from the original 7.62x45mm round, then put away until sold off.
Very well made gun. Just make sure it is the /57 version, not the older 52 version in x45mm. Very little ammo for the original calibre.

If the rifle is in good shape, by any means get it!
VZ-52/57 were derived from the VZ-52 and are the most desirable of the litter because of the caliber (7,62x39), their robustness and accuracy.
In fact, these rifles were overengineered. Everything in them is fully machined apart from the trigger guard which is a flat spring steel band.
They are getting scarce now and you'll be well advised getting one while you can. You won't regret.
If you need hints on tuning, cleaning and take-down, just ask me.
PP.:)

I bought one NIB in the early 90's for 200.00 and have put through 16 rounds, very robust and very nice metal finishing despite the russian pellet rifle wood stock

love the bayo. How is the accuracy?

Yep, the bayo is a fun, if useless feature.

Accuracy is as good as the ammo you put in it. I'll not quote group sizes, just my general impressions. Most surplus 7.62x39 ammo is pretty sloppy stuff, like the cheap Czech M43 ball which gives so-so accuracy. Accuracy with home cast bullets its quite a bit better, but the best accuracy I've seen was with Privi Partizan (Yugo) softpoint hunting ammo - that stuff would shoot!

A guy brought one of those at the range once for a little military rifle shoot, was nice, I dont recall the accuracy, looked nice, not sure if it was in 7.62x39. Either way, gun went on full-auto... :p IIRC, according to the guy he had played a bit with the gas system, but i guess it didnt work out good. because, like i said, went out in full auto, maybe it just slammed fired...

...VZ52/57 model variations...

....I have encountered this arm in three model variations...1) "Blue Top" (painted in standard czech blue-gray)...2) "Black Top" (painted in black) for Cuban export...3) "Sniper" with a machined steel rail on the side of the receiver to accept a czech night vision scope......this is what I know....

I have a Vz-52 in 7.62x45, a Vz-52 converted to 7.62x39 and a Vz-52/57 in 7.62x39. They are interesting, robustly constructed rifles that generally work well and have a decent trigger pull.

Here's a video of my Vz-52 that was converted to 7.62x39:

I have the exact same three guns, except that my Vz-52 is converted to 7.62x39 using the Numrich sleeve and Locktite. I have some 7.62x45 milsurp ammo and make my own from 6.5x52 Carcano brass.

Great video. Easy to see it was made by a Spud: red soil; the "Canada" bag gun rest; and mags conveted to 5 rounds. ;)

Andy,

When I bought the converted rifle in the video I wasn't sure just how the x45 to x39 conversion had been carried out. Initially I thought it might have been converted with a chamber insert, like yours.

Once I got it home and compared it to the 52 and 52/57 it was obvious that the barrel of the converted rifle was shortened by 1 cm from the breach end and re chambered. Likewise the "connecting rod/slide" in the gas system was shortened by 1 cm. I have no idea who did the conversion.

The converted rifle runs 100% if I use the Vz- 52/57 mag, but with the original Vz-52 7.62x45mm mag there is the occasional FTF.

I have a limited amount of surplus 7.62x45 ammo, I shot some of it years ago but I think I'll just keep the rest. I should have bought more - it was something like $2.50 a box back when I got the rifle!

Yep, no hiding the fact that the video is "shot" in PEI. My "custom" gun rest is made from a feed bag sewn into three compartments filled with dried beans - much nicer than a sand bag & easier to lug around too.

I've heard that there is a relatively easy way of converting VZ52/57 to accept AK magazines. Have anybody seen or tried it?

I've owned some in the past (52 & 52/57) and all were refurbished, usually with un-numbered bolts and mis-matched handguards.

Haven't seen anything about the black paint/ blue-grey paint distinction. Where is this information found?

I presently have both a 52/57 refurb and a 52/57 fully matching with the scope rail.

Most interesting of the 7.62x39 self loading rifles, IMO.

I was always curious about one with rail. Is this the same rail as AK currently has? Can you mount POSP series of scopes on it?
