A "gunsmithing" question for the CZ/VZ old hands regarding the stock bolts on the VZ-58 & CZ-858 rifles.

The bolt on these is a metric thread m12X1.0, which is not a common thread to get either bolts or dies for. The long bolts specific to the "beaver barf" stock and the short countersunk bolt specific to the factory folder are not in extremely short supply, but you'll not find them anywhere except a place like GunNutz or perhaps the importer.

Has anyone working on custom stocks, or adapting, say, folding stocks from other types, gone to the option of drilling out the receiver and re-tapping the stock bolt hole for a more common thread, either SAE or Metric?

not at all worth it. A custom screw can be whipped out on a lathe easily enough. If you were to only have one made it might cost you 10 bucks or so
and If you were planning on making several the price would go way down. Either way a few extra bucks for a screw is better than making an unreversible mod for your rifle that doesn't have any inherent advantage.

I have considered it, but it is not that hard to make the components on a lathe, and I don't feel right about doing a bubba job on such a nice rifle. If you look hard enough you can buy taps, dies and even screws but they cost more.

not me . doing that leads to bubbaing the red presto and the metal side folder as well ... i dont like to bubba vz/cz.

we made a custom nut for our fabarm knoxx stock adaptor plate.
It is SAE one side and metric the other, cnc milled from 416 stainless steel, was not cheap but its perfect , no bubba on the gun or the stock adaptor.

Yes, that's the best answer in the end. A custom "tweenie".

I have the lathe, saving up for a mill (someday), and I feel as most do that it would be a mistake to modify the receiver in this way, especially as it is a one-way modification.

Having said that, I saw one yesterday which appeared to have been modified in this fashion, drilled and re-tapped to what I believe was an SAE fine thread bolt. The replacement stock was a skeleton job, like a Galil except longer, welded up out of metal tubing (stainless, I think). It didn't appear to have any folding mechanism.

I didn't have a camera to get a picture, and the gentleman was not forthcoming otherwise, so I didn't get a chance to learn more about his "project".

It was not a "bodge job" in terms of the workmanship - welding excellent, machine work looked good, but I must say that seeing the head of what appeared to be a grade 5 bolt peeking out behind the receiver was somewhat disconcerting.
