I'm currently trying to work on a dust cover prototype, but can't decide on a version. Each have their pros and cons, so I decided to put it up here to see what people thought. This dust cover would go on top of the actual dust cover, since the return mechanism is riveted there and would end up really complicated to manufacture. Also, all versions feature a ramp for brass ejection.

(Please keep in mind that version 1 is the one I spent the most time on, 2-3-4 are quick mockups I did from version 1 in 10 minutes, they would have a better look once finished, not just square angles everywhere)
1. 2 top rails, the front one that co-witness with the iron sights. Full see-through for iron sights. Cheaper as the top rail is bought separately. It has another optional side rail on the left too.
2. Even cheaper to manufacture, as it keeps the original (or aftermarket) upper handguard. Could end up looser (wiggly) depending on upper handguards. Also has an optional ~6inch side rail on the left.
3. Full length, but the top rail has to be machined with it. It would cost more and the iron sights could end up difficult to use for longer shots. Also has optional side rails. The end part (near the muzzle) would probably be visually different, most likely to line up with the lower handguard with some other detail cuts.
4. Full length, also the top rail machined, but it loses the iron sights. Lighter, but less versatile and still more expensive than 1 & 2. Same comment for the visual look as 3.

Good luck with that.

If you can deal with the ejection problem effectively, you still are faced with frequent removal for cleaning and the associated return-to-zero issues.

A railed upper/lower handguard is about as good as it gets on a VZ-58. The gun's design won't allow for much more "trouble-free" rail upgrades... except maybe a Dragunov/AK-style scope mount rail on the side of receiver.

Good idea, but I don't see too many takers for that particular "upgrade" (if sales are your goal).

:(

I think a receiver cover rail is viable too, provided it will RTZ fairly well. It doesn't have to be perfect, as you can get away with cleaning the receiver less frequently than the front end. Down side to that set up is you're still limited to short optics unless a brass deflector is also provided.

I like #1 the best... but it doesnt need to use the factory sights IMO. Just make it lower and get rid of that function. Ill add sights after.

I really like this idea. I like that it is a single part for the dust cover and front guard. If there was an EASY way to attach to the dust cover so that it can easily be removed for cleaning, id definitely be down for one. But, if its requires a whole bunch of fitting on teh dust cover every time you install it, thats a problem.

I think #1 looks good, but #4 seems the most logical. I just don't really see the point of the two different sight planes on #1. It's cool that the irons are usable/cowitness, but I feel like to the get the most out of the top rail, you would need a straighter stock angle, and then the irons would be hard to use anyway?

With #4 it seems more streamline, and you could mount all sorts of stuff on the same sight plane. You lose the irons, but you gain a whole flat top of rails for irons/scopes/dots whatever. And you could set up your stock for a nice cheek weld since everything is at the same level.

Here's why there's no update:

I found that CSA already had one, added to the lack of time with work, it was simpler for me to just buy the railed dust cover ;)

I thought NEA was cooking up something?? I remember seeing something on the net, and IIRC it will be a game changer.
PS not shilling, just like NEA vz products
