VZ-58 for $399!

$399.95 sounds great but FFL transfer if godly expensive. For a gun like this its probably a $60 - $80 charge for FFL transfer + taxes. By the time its all said and done, you will probably get this gun for $500+ in the states. Still better than $699 + taxes than what we would pay for it but I still believe $699 from our retailers is reasonable. Everything from working on getting the gun approved in the first place, importation fees, fees for shipping the rifles to Canada to the importer, to selling and shipping the rifles out to dealers, + storage and employee costs is all factored into the price of the gun. Gun dealers here probably aren't even making $50 on a sale for a $699 gun. They get their money off of you buying ammunition and accessories.

A $250 SKS that wouldn't sell for $75 here in Canada from Classic Firearms in the states cost people over $400 by the time they leave with it from their FFL.

It's frustrating to us but I don't think it's as simple as blaming the dealers for price gouging. There may be some of that where certain companies have exclusive rights but for the most part Canadian dealers have to deal with a much smaller market and far more regulations than their American counterparts.

For example an American dealer could make a deal for 10,000 rifles in a standard configuration. A Canadian distributor might have a place an order for 500 riles modified to meet Canadian regulations.

The dealers I know are not getting rich, they are mostly small businesses that have a passion for what they do.

There are many cases where guns (like the SCAR) don't meet Canadian standards, but are OK for sale in the U.S. This can add huge cost and uncertainty to any dealer looking to import firearms.

We also have access to inexpensive Norinco firearms and cheap SKS's/SVT's. It's a 2 way street when it comes to firearms prices here in Canada. Sure, they get most things cheaper in the U.s., but we can get things they can't.
