Hi everyone,

I was just pondering the fact that the VZ 58 has a 15.5" barrel length and the fact that it's not very far off the non-restricted length.

I know that it's possible to say install a longer barrel in a PPK pistol to go from being prohib to restricted, and wondered if anyone has tried say installing a longer muzzle brake on a VZ to make it reach over that magical number to move into the non restricted range?

They removed the option of welding on longer brakes long ago. They also measure barrel from the rear end of the attachment, even if the barrel continues into the attachment.

You will have to rebarrel your current rifle. If you want a chrome lined 18.5 barrel you're looking at having something made from a chrome lined blank and then having it installed. I can only guess but $650 for the rifle + $500 for the new custom barrel (conservative estimate) means $1150+.

CZ858-2 $650.

It seems pretty clear what your options are.

VZ58L is an option as well but finding one is not easy and considering Marstar's last efforts with the VZ58 I think it will be a while before we see some more come available.

You seek a VZ-58L

Sold out, but put an ad on the EE.

Y'know I THOUGHT I remembered reading about these a year ago on Marstar's site and when my friends would tell me the 858 didn't have a chrome lined barrel I thought I must have been wrong about having ever seen one that did.
Thank you! You've restored my self confidence! lol!

Now if I could only get my hands on one of these babies...

The east block barrels usually are chromed. The 858s likely don't have it because it is cheaper when they were built. Cheaper, not better - and not to original specs.

Different reasons and different purposes. Chrome helps with wear, corrosion resistance, and helps actions run smoother. I'm not dissing chrome, I've never considered it neccessary. To chrome a barrel the tolerances are oversized and then filled to spec with chrome. The chrome placement is generally uneven and in some cases(rare), crack or flake. It is also proven to inhibit accuracy, the reason many sniper platforms use non chromed barrels. I understand this is an assault rifle in original form, and chrome will help with full auto wear and tear, but as the CZ/VZ stand now, there just 5 shot semi's. They no longer "require" a chrome lining. I think of it as a positive they arent chromed actually. A longer barrel with exact uniform tolerances, maybe a bit more accurate for shot placement with a better chance for one shot kills, nice for hunting. As far as corrosion go's, when I was in I had my c9/c7 tore apart every time we stopped long enough, and they had chromed barrels, chrome isnt a free "no clean needed" pass, some corrosives actually eat thru it!. Again it just depends how you look at it, theres really not enough difference ,good or bad, to be a deciding factor in purchasing. Just how I see it.
