Well in my never ending pursuit to modify my surroundings, I finally broke down and went ahead and sorted out the "cocking handle on the wrong side" .. as I see it, on my VZ.

Let me start off by saying that I motivated myself for the task by first removing the original charging handle. Nothing like burning a bridge to keep you moving.

It was a pretty easy job. Lob off old handle, machine new meaner, 'cooler' handle, drill, tap, paint. Only thing left to do is finish the build off by giving her a head to toe duracote treatment.

nice... i presume the carrier wasnt made of tuff steel , like the SKS carrier , no breaking drill bits?

So, what was the reason you wanted it on the left side?

I am right handed and I charge the handle with my left hand while holding the gun with my right, but it doesn't seem that much of a big deal to just lean the gun 90* left to do it.

Because I can change mags in 1/3 the time with it on the left, all the while never losing my sight picture. It has the same action as the bolt release on an AR. I don't find the charging handle preferable on either the left or right side for loading.. but I do when reloading.

And because I can..

Nice handle and nice knurling.
Another nice touch would have been to hollow out the button to reduce its mass as is desirable on any fast reciprocating part that juts out unsupported.
Good job anyway.
PP.

It is. It's hollow, but I put a cap on the end purely for estetic purposes.

I would disagree with that statement, adding mass to the carrier is in almost all circumstances beneficial to the action of the rifle.

very nice work though.

Mass to the carrier is a thing; but an offset rapidly reciprocating and unsupported mass is something else, prone to flex and stresscrack at the base of the stem and fly off at the most inopportune moment.
Besides, it creates a sideways torque on the carrier's rails at the end of each cycle, opening and closing. Hence the hollowing-out on most charging handles.

Is there really any better reason out there???
Looks pretty cool, X2 for the manufacturing to sell.
