VZ58 .223 gas piston problem

Hello,

I did do a search for this before posting and didn't come up with any hits.

The problem I am experiencing on my VZ58 .223 which I fired for the first time on Friday at the range is that the piston isn't always returning into the gas port chamber. It is getting hung up on the top lip of the tube at the gas port which in turns holds the bolt carrier part way open.

I did replace the front hand guard set with a TufForce quad rail system, but I don't think is causing the problem.

Has anyone experienced this problem and what was the solution.

email info@moviearms.com they are the warranty people for CSA. They just fixed mine.
 
I just looked at mine trying to get it to replicate your problem. Pushed the piston as far back as it could go and then let go even holding it upside down did nothing. I'm wondering if your piston rod is bent. The only way I could replicate your problem was by pulling the piston back, then pulling it part was out to hang up on the lip. Something is causing your piston to go out of alignment.

Can you try to replicate your problem with the top hand guard off? Push the piston as far as it will go then let go of it and see if you can get it to hang up. If you can, then its obviously not the hand guard at fault. I bet the piston, spring, and hand guard are the same as the 7.62x39 models so If you have friends with Vz 58 rifles then see if you can try there pistons and see what happens. By the way, what model is this Vz because mine is the 18.5" Sporter which would only have the same parts as other 18.5" or the 15.5" model if there even is one.

I wouldn't try grinding the gas port lip at all or this may cause your piston to come shooting out rather then go into the port.

I just inspected my hand guard and there is an indent in the hand guard that looks like its meant to keep the piston inline with the port.

I appreciate the quick replies and advise you guys have posted regarding my piston problem. I will do as you suggest and see if I can tell if the piston rod is bent and will follow up with a call to Graham at moviearms. My rifle is a CSA Sporter with an 18.5 inch barrel.

I also noticed that indent on the original hand guard top and wondered if that could be for helping keep the piston aligned, but that would be a poor design if that is the case.

I will keep you posted on how I make out.

You replaced OEM parts with cheap Chinese airsoft ones, started having problems, and don't think they're related? The indent in the handguard does exactly what you speculated. It keeps everything in line.

Put the original handguard back on and shoot it. Then see if you still need warranty work.

I put the original hand guard back on and put 10 rounds through it without a failure. In regards to the TufForce hand guard I didn't consider it to be an airsoft product as I purchased it from a reputable CGN Sponsor Dealer. I knew it was a lower end product, but when I purchased it I figured it should work based on who was selling it to me. I have spent several thousand dollars with this CGN Sponsor dealer and will be contacting them to discuss this item.

Glad to hear you figured it out.

I wouldn't hold the sponsor responsible for the poor design of the handguard. They don't always have direct experience with the accessories they sell so the have to take the item on faith. Hopefully they'll exchange it for you or do a refund.
