Quick question,

As anybody tried their VZ58 at 300M-500M? Will they stay on a fig 11 and fig 12 if the shooter does it's part???

I'm thinking it would be fun to use the gun in the service rifle match... but I'd hate to miss the target because the gun can't hold it :yingyang:

Approved 300M-500M for restricted firearms aren't that common in Quebec

Sure does, last week end at borden my mom shot with my CZ-858 and she hit the target at 500 metres a few time.

Where are you from?

Stay on a figure 11 or 12 at 500 is probably a stretch. At least with czech ammo. Some of that stuff even sounds differently. You should get some hits though.

Exoce† has been using a box stock 858 with czech ammo out to 500m. Might want to ping him if he does not jump in soon. He seams to be doing alright with it, at least until >400m. After that, I think there is a limitation in the ammo.

Proof it can be done!!!!

On the day shown above I was averaging 19 of 20 on the panel (4'x4') and about 15 of 20 for score.
Edit: This is from 400 meters.

I was holding alexD92's mom's Fig 11s and Fig12s last weekend, I can also vouch that it can be done. She was even using iron sights.

I might suggest using magnified optics if possible if you're gonna use it for an actual match, I'm sure it's quite a challenge to keep on target when the front sight post is bigger than the target no matter how good a shooter you are.

Optics are for sissies!!!
Well actually I don't like any of the mounting options for the 858 and I've shot matches this way for 2 years, so I won't bother with optics until I get a different service rifle.

More camo, eh? My marpat ACUs are on the way and I scored a czech steel helmet from ribtor. Next time out I'll up the cam-factor to 11!

I used my 858 in a Swiss rifle match a couple of years ago. All rounds fired at 300m, prone unsupported. Scored 79/81! No one was more supprized than I. All I had done was zero centre of mass at 100m, adjusted the sight to 300 and blazed away.

All right :D

I've got a 2x EER scope on it, I'll look up the balistic chart to find out how much of a hold over I'll need at 500M. Should be interesting...

How many magazines do you usually bring for the service match?

Mike
Before that gets answered, how fast can you change your VZ58 mags? You might be better off just using stripper clips. They're pretty quick for the VZ58 in particular. Time yourself using both.

Mag changes are mandatory in service conditions, AFAIK. Under pressure I'd always go for the mag change over the stripper clip. If you fumble your mag you can just try again but with clips you can wind up jamming the gun and have to drop the mag, clear and seat the mag again. Then you have to thumb in any rounds you lost in the experience. By that point you've missed at least one exposure.

Firing a VZ at a match your scores will be low compared to teched out AR and HK guys so you can't afford a lot of screw-ups. And if you jam a soviet rifle in front of a bunch of AR guys you're going to get harassed.:(

We have had guys compete with SKS's as well these rifles in the hands of a knowledgable shooter are quite capable .The limiting factor's as I see it are lack of optics and the availabilty of good quaility ammuntion . Yes you might get harrased by others but no worse than the guys that shoot No 4 MK I with iron sights

That's OK, I can deal with a bit of harrasment ;) ...

Looking at the Winchester ballistic for their 123 gr. USA Full Metal Jacket, if I sight the gun in for 200 yards... I'll need to aim 102" higher for the 500 yards target ... Put this in meters and that's about 3 times the drop of a .223...

Ho well, should be fun nevertheless.
