Hey guys,

Sold my AR, kind of want a restricted next to fill that gap in the safe... What's the final verdict on the 7.62x39 VZ Magwell(s)?

Seen a lot of old threads on this, most from around when the B&T adapter came out. Wondering how people feel about these now, years down the road.

I would rather get the gun in it's original, proven caliber, but if the .223 versions are more reliable running 10 round stanag mags... I think I'd go that route.

Has anyone shot a short/super short .223 or 7.62x39 with the magwell adapter? Did it run 100%?

There are no magwell adapters for 7.62x39 model. The CZ58/ VZ858, 7.62x39 mags are stupidly reliable. The 7.62x39 version is more reliable then the 5.56 model. The only adapters are for the 5.56 version. They convert the magwell to make it stanag compatible.

The original VZ58 mags for the 5.56 model are more reliable then going the stanag adapter route. Going with the magwell adapter for stanag compatible seems to be a crap shoot. Some say it runs perfect while others have feeding trouble or mag drop free issues. Also the stanag magazines used should be metal not plastic. Metal functions best.

Got it, very helpful thanks!

Hi, I have 556 version and it is awesome with legal 10 round mags lar 15 pistol mags and they are compatible with my wk 180 c. I am quite excited now to shoot again soon.

I have a restricted 858 in 7.62x39 that has a BT Magwell adapter. Allows you to use the LAR 10 round mags. The receiver required machining to get it to work but Wolverine sold it to me that way. I converted it back since it's a range only item anyway and I am a bit of a purist. Worked fine...was just a bit chunky looking. Still have it and a few mags mags if anyone is desperate for one. I think that you lose the bolt hold open after last round with the BT adapter though.

I have 2013 I think CSA VZ 58 with a B and T adapter. Mine did not require machining. Apparently there are a 2 versions of CSA revivers mine works well. Only likes ASC/XCR pistol mags and requires minor fitting.

I bought a second hand Vz58 in 5.56 a couple years ago and it already had an AR magwell installed. I have put around 1000 rounds through it and it has had two malfunctions. Both times were the round being fed nose dives a bit and gets stuck before the feed ramp. I think it may be due to the slight wiggle the magwell has. I only have Magpul Pmags and C Products pistol mags, and the malfunctions happened once with each.

Otherwise, I have had no other issues. The C Products mags feed fine, but they're tight to insert on a closed bolt, and with the mag well you have to remove the bolt hold open. The first round usually gets dented when inserted, but goes in with a good whack.

Unfortunately though, I have 6 mags that have the coupler base plates, and they take some of the space in the mag, so fully loaded coupled mags are almost impossible to insert. On my XCR I can just hold the bolt open and insert the mag, then drop the bolt to load, but on the Vz it's impossible. I tried adding Magpul Ranger Plates to 3 of my pistol mags, but they also take up extra space in the bottom of the mag, and with only one am I able to insert. Something to keep in mind. Other brands might work better because the C Products mags are pretty tight.

I found that the B&T adaptor is essentially useless, unless you have old (as in they don't make them anymore) CPD LAR mags that have the portion above the mag catch hole protruding, like the lower portion is on the mags, to keep the mag from going too far into the receiver.

Without the upper dimpled out, there is nothing to retain the mag with the B&T adaptor, as the catch for the mag sits flush with the adaptor magwell, rather than proud into the magwell.

CPD is the only manufacturer I know who at one time had an "enhanced" LAR mag, which had the contours to benefit from the B&T adaptor. Directly talking to them, it is not a mag they will be producing again.

This is all related to 7.62 x 39. Not sure if same for 223.

All I did on mine was flare/bend the bottom part out with pliers. Another harder way is take the mag apart and make an insert that you can hammer a dimple in. I chose to bend it out. Once in awhile the mag falls out. All my mags are coupled. I really like the B and T adapter. Super solid and well made. My rifle is the 762x39.

I have the CSA adapter in my 5.56 sporter model. Mine required milling as it is an early serial number, I had the milling done by tacord in newmarket which is who CSA sent me to. I have approx 2,000 rounds through mine without a single misfeed, i have been extremely happy with how reliable it is. I use LAR mags (3 brands) , PMAGS, and the standard issue stamped steel mags. None of them have ever given me an issue. It's well worth it imo to be able to use LARs.

I looked at dimpling my mags myself, but then we get into a topic I believe goes in the legalese forum.

My understanding is that in the quest to use alternate mags, you can literally do whatever you want/need to the rifle, to accept the mag, but that modifications to the mag, to suit the rifle (or adapter, potentially) then crosses a line. With my past, I'm not going there. Even to put a small dimple into a mag.

But all in all, yes, dimpling the section above the cutout on the mag, is all that is needed for the adapter to work.

Older ASC mags work as well.

I'm using the CSA adaptor and it works fine with 7.62x39. I've fired over 1000 rounds with no problems at all. I'm using xcr pistol mags coupled together. I'm not sure why CSA says it doesnt work with 7.62 but it does. Here's a post I made a while back that shows what will need to be machined out in the older receivers. Mine was already machined so I just installed the adaptor and I was good to go.
