Hey there, I know there are many VZ58 owners here. Just wanted to gain more information on where you mounted your rail for an optic and why you chose that position.

I know there are 4-5 possible mounting options.

There is the dust cover mount which puts the rail furthest back towards the stock on the receiver
- pro for this I've read is the ability to co witness with iron sights
- con could be added step to remove mount for disassembly
- also noticed that the zahal videos of the suped up VZ58 are mounted in this position

I've seen the side mount which also puts in near the rear but attached to the side as opposed to on the top of the dust cover
- ability to co witness

I've also seen the 'scout mount' which replaces the rear leaf sight
- con is the inability to cowitness as the mount is placed higher than the rear leaf sight
- would be unaffected with takedown

There is also different types of rails/handguards (bonestell, NEA, Fab Defense) that would place a rail on the foreend.
- I think the Fab Defense handguard has a valley on the rail so if you need your irons the ability would be there if you removed your optic from the rail

I guess I am trying to figure out if I want to add an optic and wanted some insight as to what others have experienced. Some of the ones I've seen, in particular the Zahal website, the optics is mounted on the dust cover and looks like the optic is very close to the face, wondered if the optic ever hit the user in the face from the recoil.

All opinions and experiences would be appreciate, thanks in advance.

Wolverine has scout rails (on sale) that double as backup irons when the top rail is removed, or alternately have enough space to include a rear sight as well as optic.

I saw on one of the stickies that removal of the upper handguard interfers with the rail during assembly/disassembly?

Can the rail be mounted an inch back towards the stock?

Or does anyone have experience with Scout Mount versus BC Tactical Scout Mount?

You can't move it backwards, however it is reversible, where it would protrude over the action instead.

The rail removes completely though, while leaving the base intact. I haven't tried it yet, but the nature of the design leads me to believe there would be zero to negligible shift in POI in doing so for cleaning.

I'd only go with front mounted rails IF you only ever wish to equip red dots. Side mount is the most expensive way to mount optics, but IMO is the best way when it comes to red rifles

NEA upper handguard mount and the Corwin-style receiver cover replacement mounts are the best, in my opinion. I've tried most of the others at one time or another, and have settled on these.

I'm left handed, the side mount looks like it makes the scope slight offset to the left for right handed shooters, that probably won't be an option.

NEA handguards are discontinued, however I may be able to get a bonesteel handguard. Anyone ever notice any wiggle with these aftermarket railed handguard uppers? I notice the factory heatshield does have a bit of give.

PKA sight on unfinished :( CSA VZ 58 using this mount: http://westrifle.com/wrstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15&products_id=804
