So I've been messing around trying to figure out the most efficient way to do a tactical mag change with the VZ58. IE primary hand on the PG and reaction hand doing a controlled mag change removing a fresh mag from the pouch, reloading and then replacing the spent or partial mag in the pouch.

The answer is Hockey tape on the mags...

Ooh and an extended mag release that actually sits below the trigger guard.

reloading and then replacing the spent or partial mag in the pouch.

Dump pouch needed. ;)

Replacing the mag consumes time, takes your focus away from the shooting and presents a problem if your mind wonders and you forget which mag was the partial one.

Your brain shouldn't have to be remembering which mag to pull out of which pouch.

no video, nothing yet.

I'm actually working on the tactical mag release design right now. I have a working concept that I just need to get drawn up in CAD. The good news is that it works. Now I can release the mags with my trigger finger both left and right handed.

Consolidate forward and replace the mag to your last draw pouch. Dump bag is great until you find that you need the partial magazine. Tactical in the case of this thread means "I have at least a second to think" not a speed dump, load and shoot drill. Either way no matter what line of thought you subscribe to the point is with the mag release one can now do a proper tactical and speed change .

Mags where I need more grip, I put elastic bands made out of bike inner tubes on.

I also do this to some pistol grips.

The CZ mags are a little slippery feeling. Bike tube elastics, or "ranger bands" if you can stand to call them that, might be a good call.

Whether you like a dump pouch for partials I think is dependent on whether you drop your empties on the ground or in the pouch.

I used to drop all mags in the pouch. That makes it a lousy place to put partials because there's always a bunch of empties to sort through.

If all empties get chucked and only partials go in the dump pouch (which is what most guys do these days) then it's a pretty good spot because you're bound to be pulling out something useful.

I hate curved mags for the most part but one nice thing is that they sure index well. Even with gloves on you never wonder how you just grabbed it like you sometimes do with an M14.

To heck with it, I'd use stripper clips as often as possible. That way I've always got a couple full mags anyway. Takes about 5 seconds to load 30 rnds into the mag when it's in the gun, probably a minute off the gun. Makes better sense to save full mags for when you need the extra 2 seconds...:p

Besides, I find it kinda awkward to change mags not because of the release, but because of the front notch/pivet move thing. Ar15 mags just slap in, less finesse involved. It makes tac mag changes a must, no stripper guide, but the cz has a better plan built into it's design, imho.

Well, an Uncle Mike's hammer extension (there are several sizes, I forget which one I got that fits) works pretty well for working the mag release with mittens on, for about $10 investment. I haven't tried to make it into an ambi yet.

I find it rather easy, but if you practice anything enough it does get more natural. The nice thing about the VZ/AK setup is that you can find the hole quite easy and when you lock it back you know its locked. With the AR sometimes people fail to fully seat the mag causing stoppages and rogue mags.

The only real downside to the VZ/AK system is that they don't naturally fall away when released, this is only an issue on speed changes though. So to solve this just release the mag and push it away with your new mag to carry on. easy beasy. With this design you can also do AK style changes where the operator releases the empty mag and pushes it away with a fresh one all in one operation.

So I've been thinking about this for the last couple days (bastard :D). and I think I'm gonna try it out. What options do you have for a simple chest rig?

BTW I think I've found a very nice and affordable chest rig for the VZ58. I'll post it up in this thread: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=361511 once I take some pics.

I've got the bottom 3/4 of my mags sprayed with Tool Dip (same thing that puts the rubber on plier handles etc..). Great grip on the mags. Add to that a good dump pouch and left side charge, mag changes are just a 'slap' away.

Stripper clip all the way... way faster for me

I find the 5 round limit with stripper clips really sucks. With a full clip the last round is hard to seat and with a partial clip (5rds) the rounds are harder to control. As always YMMV.
