I'm looking for some thoughts on how high above the receiver cover should a scope rail on a CZ/VZ be? Let's assume the rail ran the entire length from the receiver cover pin and over the action to approximately the rear sight.

I was thinking maybe mounting a Kalinka type side mount with Weaver top rail. Perhaps cut the mount down to the ideal height, and extend the Weaver top rail so that you could mount an Eotech/Aimpoint and 3x magnifier. Here's the mount that could be modified and lengthened.

Yay or nay on this idea?

Would hold zero, easy remove for cleaning or use of iron sights. Proven clamping design that works well.

A few guys have done this. There is the small problem of a spacer being needed. I think a 1/4in thick piece is required to bring a AK mount to the proper height due to the recessed side of a 858. I made my side rail myself to mount the mount to but havent gotten around to putting it on yet. And I have a mill...There was a great set of pictures around here somewhere with instructions on how he did it a short time ago.

Yes, I did follow that good thread you linked to. I would like to place the optic centerline than the the original clamp mounts are designed for. My main concern is how low to the receiver/action I can mount the rail so that there are no spent case ejection issues. Anyone?

the mount you picked is too low, i think its for a SKS, heres is a higher one .

but i dont think it was design to be dead center , the off set helps the scope not get hit by ejecting casings and a bracket will make the off set by another 1/4" .

Here's what I did with mine - the mount worked great - I didn't need a spacer. Though my smith had to champher the ends and grind a bit of the bottom of the rail mount before he drilled and tapped it. The rail fit right into the "slot" on the bottom portion of the receiver. Sight is a PKAS...great sight....the sytem returned to zero after removal.

a bracket is not needed for red dot mounts bcos the mount is further back , next to the top cover . unlike mounting a reg scope.

I'm toying with a mount that attaches using the existing holes and longer bolts to replace existing pins. Kind of like the 870 mounts. I'd rather have bolt on than drill holes in the side of my receiver.

yes, you should give that a try but from my limited experience , i think any attachment (behind the rear sight) without drilling and tapping will not be very secure .

i thought of your idea before but fear binding the receiver .

I know the side rail mounts were working out well for others projects. What I meant to say was I wanted to make a side mount with a Weaver rail long enough to install both a Eotech/Aimpoint and 3x magnifier. I'll try.:)

What kind of duties are you guys paying for these side mounts that are shipped from Belarus?
