W Chance and Son

It looks to have an adjustable, possibly set trigger. This is normally found on rifles rather than muskets which usually weren’t accurate enough to benefit from such devices. The octagon barrel is also more common to rifles than muskets. Very nice looking piece, W Chance & Son was a Birmingham England firm with a history of making and exporting trade guns to NW US. This is a fine quality sporting rifle, probably from the 1840-1860 period, not a trade gun.

The information I have is that William Chance & Son was an English company with an office in New York City, operating as gunmakers and importers from 1842 to 1853. Very nice rifle. I agree with Ashcroft, it started life as a quality sporting rifle with an adjustable or set trigger. If it is smoothbore now, that would have been a later modification (and not for the better?).

Great looking piece!I have a Chance and Sons vest pocket pistol and my son owns a very nice Chance and Sons 14 gauge muzzle loadiing shotgun!
The shogun is full of silver iinlays on the rib!
