w748 and 308 win

I was sorting out my powders and found some w748 I had left over from another project. I thought I would use it up in some 308 loads using 150 and 165 bullets. Has anybody here tried it and what were your results? I realize every rifle is different, just wondering is all.

I think you'd be happier with Win 760 or Varget but no harm trying the 748 as all guns are different.Mine didn't care for it but 748 is great in the 30-30 + .300 Savage.......JMO

My model 70 does very well with 47 grains of 748 over a 150 gr. PP bullet

I use 45.2gr of W748 in my 308 pushing a 175 SMK. I have a 20 inch barrel and I find it to be a very clean burning load.

Hi there. One thing I found with the 308 and W748 is that mine was not fussy with the 150 grain bullets. Generally the 308 is accurate with many combinations. Cheers.

The .308 and 748 were made for each other. That's a fact according to Winchester, not personal opinion. 748 works the best with the lighter bullets, under 180 grains. Individual rifles still have preferences and shooters are individuals too, but it is hard to suggest a more suitable match than the one you have in mind. With my .308's and 165's I use 748, but have also used with good success Varget, RL15, IMR4064, and IMR 3031. I have mostly used Winchester primers in 748 loads, because they were formulated for good ignition of relatively hard to start ball powders.

I agree. I buy 8 lb kegs of 748, as it is usually much cheaper, and then use it to reload 147 gr. fmj's in my 7.62 and 55/62 gr. 5.56 fmj's. Very inexpensive round, will duplicate factory velocities, and is accurate to boot.

I agree here, too. Not hard to find an accurate load for, say service rifle, with this powder and any bullet between 147 and 168 grs.

Finally, I have found good results in my .30-30 with this powder as well using both 150 and 170 gr. bullets.
