im gonna wade in on the great debate of the golden bayo . i have spent alot of time researching it and the consensus on here and other forums are its cos by cosmo.

i never been a believed its cos by packing grease nor cosmo , why? cos my early chinese came in cosmo and there was no gold , matter of fact there is no such thing as golden bayo in any other SKS made by other countries, its only found in the russian.

also the gold on my bayo is fairly even applied , you wouldnt get that if some worker slapped the grease on it and then how come the carrier isnt golden also .

what i believe its some sort of a protective coating , exactly what ? i dont know but i do know how its applied , its dipped , i have a few bayo that indicate so . this is what it looks like .

i have tried duplicating the golden bayo and have not been successful , i have heated a metal in a toaster over and then dipped it into cosmo , altho it did turn out as gold but the texture was not right or the texture was right but the color is off.

heres are my other russian bayo, from left : original matte silver, gold coated on silver, gold coated on bright steel , painted black and lastly blued .

:agree: Definitely not preservative or cosmoline. It is some kind of varnish.

Usually a solvent test would give us some indication of what the coating is but that would dissollve the coating. I like my gold bayo too much to risk that.
