Went to campers villge to get a new stove ring for my tent. The young fella may have knew his fashion, but didn't know tents. But he insisted that stove rings are now made out of a new fangled material and neoprene.

This ring sure looks to me like it will melt. And it is greyish blue, not white.

Am I a Fudd or is this kid clueless? Anyone else using these?

The old heat resistance stuff was made from asbestos. Then they learned that inhaling as little as one hair of it can cause lung cancer, down the road.
Thankfully, asbestos is now prohibited in Canada.
A good young clerk at the tent store.

Hmmm? Was there some other material used between the days of asbestos and this new "neoprene-type" stuff?

My wall tent has a stove-pipe orfice made of a white coarsely woven sort of soft flexible and supposedly fireproof fabric. I just obtained it about five years ago and sewed it in place. I have only used the tent for about 6 days since then.:eek:

Am I inhaling asbestos?? I think I better find out.

I don't know the answer to that, but most likely yours is OK.

The other white stuff is kind of like fiberglass and is not asbestos so don't worry. It is used to seal up big fired heaters, at lest that is what I have used it for. It comes in flat as well as round ropes. Most peoples fireplaces probably have it for door seals... it's safe.

I have also seen what I think is teflon (hard white plastic) used for stove rings.

Come to think of it, it does appear to be the same stuff as the "rope" for wood stove doors.

Thanks for responding gentlemen. I guess I won't worry about it.:)
