Went and bought some .22 today at Walmart. Although I don't agree with an ammo registry, the store has to do it or stop selling ammo. Walmart in Renfrew does a pretty good job with theirs. Binder was locked up out of sight. They only recorded my name, .22, and for quantity put 1.

I guess they don't care what size box it is. They only recorded 1. A store I went to in pembroke wrote the actual number of rnds in the book. I guess I know where to buy bulk .22 from now on.

Ontario doesn't have a gun registry but the CFO has an ammo registry.

This. Ontario has it worse than most of us it seems.

Does anyone know if this info is collected by the CFO regularly, or does it just sit in a binder at the store until the CFO has a reason to start looking through it?

The owner of the store near me said they have to submit it to the CFO upon request. Spot checks happen but he hasn't had one.

So happy when I find 22lr at Wally's totally ignorant of what they record. Vaguely recall eons ago they just look at it; I was too busy staring fondling my ammo :)

I talked to a guy working in Canadian Tire one time about the book. He said the CFO never came into the store to inspect anything, which is a good thing as sometimes people forgot or didn’t know about the book. The person in charge of the ammunition area had been storing a lot of pages and didn’t want the responsibility anymore. They called the CFO who told them to destroy everything but the last year. Seems like a good government system to me, spend money doing something then just dump the records because they are of no value. I guess it good for the stores if they dump the records every year for when they don’t enter the information in the book.

Ontario based law introduced after the murder of police officer Todd Bayliss.

We do not have it in N.B. , it is just a flash of the license , and away we go . How would the recording of ammo purchases stop a police officer from being murdered......what was the reasoning for bringing the law in ?

Most places I go in Ontario record first and last name, PAL number, calibre, and round count. Same at Walmart, Canadian Tire, LeBarons, LGS, etc.
Guy who works at the store at the range I go to said when the CFO inspects the range itself he sometimes glances through the book for a minute or two but never takes anything or writes anything down.

what was the reasoning for bringing the law in ?
Laws would have to be reasonable to have reason.

No log book here, but I do have to show my pal twice. Once to the sports staff to get the showcase open, and once at the register to the cashier.

The ammo log isnt for the CFO, if they come in, ive been told by many owners they cant even look at it without a warrent. Only reason in ontario anything is written down, like name, address and what got purchased is because of Explosives regulations that require it or the owner can get in trouble for that.

Technically they probably can't demand looking at it without a warrent, but most likely they will just ask to see it....Then what do you think the owners are going to say; A:Sure officer, her it is. or B: Go get a warrent before I let you have a look.

The CFO never checks the log books... They do store inspections to ensure that the store is in compliance with the laws, but they don't record anything from the logbooks.

that's all that's required in a CIVILIZED world- no writing things down
we can't help it if your cfo is a BUSHMAN

I've had this happen at both CTC and Walmart but last week was the best. I stop at a small CTC on the way to the range for some 22's. The young girl gets them for me and walks them to the register. The girl at customer service looks around for their ammo registration book but can't find it. She says, I know I'm supposed to record this stuff so she hands me a scrap of paper from a note pad, and asks me to write down my pal and name and address while she serves others. I write completely fictitious stuff, she never asks to see my pal. She rings up my cash purchase and then puts the slip of paper I write into the bag with the ammo. Good deal and great quality control, love it

My Canadian Tire has NEVER asked for a PAL when buying ammo. I finally called them out on it a little while back... the girl at the counter said "Oh... we don't do that here"
