Walmart Winchester bulk pack ammo is crap!

maybe the old Walmart Federal value packs were better (never tried them) this past weekend i ran out of my regular Winchester Super-X trap shells, and used a box that came out of a Winchester value pack from Wally's World. the first shell would not cycle in my Benelli and required me to push it (/w some force) into the receiver (barrel).... it ejected okay though... other shells in the box was also bulged funny and some looked like the crimping at the top was about to unravel.....

this was the crappiest ammo i've ever used in my gun, and i will never use it again, and it wasn't even that cheap.... arghhhh
 
I'm with you. Total junk. The Federals aren't much better. We took 5 shells of each brands value ammo and ran them through the Chronograph. Winchester Universals, Federal Topguns and Remington Gun Clubs. All were 3dram 1 1/8oz (1200fps) loads. The Winchester varied from 1140fps-1190fps. The Federal from 1050-1205fps and the Remington from 1180-1210fps. Shot charges varied alot aswell. Winchesters were from 460-490grns. The Federals from 430-485grns and the Remingtons from 480-495grns. 492 Grns is 1 1/8oz. With the decent prices that Gun Clubs are going for if you look around I see no reason to shoot crappy ammo just because it's cheap.
By the way I dont shoot Gun Clubs either. I reload all our ammo. The reason we did this little study was to see how a $4.50 box of factory shells compared to a $3.80 box of reloads. The reloads fared better with velocites differences of less than 20fps and shot charge differences of less than 10grns. Now is that enough of a difference to be able to tell when shooting something like a GunClub and a reload I doubt it but I just thought I pass a little cheap shell info along.

I use that ammo all the time when I run out and even used it extensively when I first started. I have never had a problem with it in either of my Browning O/U's. Maybe they are not that good for semi-auto ?? I did have problems with the federals and I will not use those ever again. I normally shoot Winchester super-X.

on all the stuff I looked at/used the case mouth was belled open so it was OK in an O/U (if you pushed the shells in) but wouldn't work worth a darn in my sons 1100.
 
What were you expecting Numbnuts ... first class ammo at fourth rate cost cut bargain basement prices ? Just like hay for your animals.... good first rate feed comes at a competitive price, but if you'll settle for hay that's already been through the animal once, well, that's a lot cheaper !
 
Ran thousands through a Browning Gold Sporting Clays and I can remember one that failed to chamber.

For the same price you can get challengers or gun clubs. I have had good luck with both of them. But then again I spent my time shooting them at targets and not disecting them. :D
 
Beretta boy, I don't remember Winchester advertising this stuff as fourth rate ammo. The actual reason the cost is lower is the non-reloadable hulls and a variety of other cost saving measures during production. the ammo should still chamber reliably even for us numbnuts that don't know as much as you.

Like mentioned beofre the reason for this was to see how cheap factory ammo combapred to reloads. Quite a few guys at our club that reloaded quite loading and started shooting cheap factory ammo. A trap shooters dream. Shooting brand new shells all the time and not have to spend a fortune to do it. Well alot if not all these guys registered scores went down instead of up which isn't what you'd expect from shooting so called "better" factory shells over reloads. Since haveing 15 guys all haveing a bad year at the same time din't seem right we figured that maybe the ammo had something to do with it. Thats how we got to compareing it to the reloads. We never did an in depth comparison with the Challenger shells but I have shot them a bit and found them to be on the higher end of quality in the cheap shell line up.
Cheap hulls......cheap shot......and even cheaper quailty control is how these shells are sold at such low prices.

There are shooters who use the low price shells and swear by them. Others swear at them.

The green hulled Kent Gamebore are reasonably priced and I think they are a notch better than either the Winchester or Federal ValuePaks. Challengers are better still and I'd put their quality on par with Kent. What you are getting with the premium shells is hulls you can reload although there is some doubt about the new Winchester AA hulls in that regard. I have no hesitation to reload the Cheddite hulls used by Kent and Challenger although I don't reuse them very often.

I'd rather spend a few extra dollars on shells and know that I'm getting consistent lead quality and velocities or spend the time reloading my own with quality components. I've never seen the point in spending thousands on a gun, many hundreds on targets and club memberships only to scrimp on what is one of the most important parts of the equation.

Agree 100% with Claybuster. Point indeed. Why put 4th rate ammunition
( Therer, I'll say it again, Winchester or Federal or anybody else's "Promo" marketting aside - since when did you believe everything you read in advertising ) in your first class gun.
 
Seems to be some QC issues with this stuff ( Winchester )

My brother bought a 100 rds box from Canadian Tire a couple of weeks ago . Off we went to shoot some trap . He had a couple of rounds fail to feed in his Remington 58 . We took a good look at the remaining rounds , about 50% had bulged hulls :shock: .

I'll be sticking with the slightly higher priced stuff .

Are the Federal bulk packs any better ?

The biggest issue we had with the Fed's were in my sons Beretta 391. He won a few flats of them at a shoot this spring and though he'd try them out. One round would cycle the action the next wouldn't some were real poopy sounding aswell. Those were 3 dram 1 1/8oz 1200fps loads. I though it was his gun at first but went back to his 1oz 1200fps reloads and it would shoot as fast as you could pull the trigger. There's was the odd shell that had the primer seated a bit deep aswell and it would fire at all. In his gun or mine.

I just started skeet this year and I buy all my shells at wally world and I been having a little trouble myself.I use a Remington pump and there has been a few times that the shells were bulged out and some even had shot falling out because of bad crimping,but I think its still a good deal.Just my two cents worth. :roll:
 
Ammo is a little hard to get around here so I can't be picky, i'm on my fourth "value pack" and buddy is on his second and we haven't had one bad shell yet, all shot in a Stoeger O/U, a Mossberg pump, a J.C Higgins pump, a Browning B-2000 semi and a Rem. 58 semi.

Not to say these are top quality but I haven't seen one bad one yet but I'm sure there out there.
 
We live in a cheap society. Everyone wants everything good and wants to pay next to nothing for it. Companies respond with cheap alternatives just to cut each other's necks! The margins of profit are so small! Companies now have so many quality control issues! This is not limited to just the shooting world.

To me, nothing ruins an outing like missing a nice shot or game because my gun jammed from a POS round of ammo. :idea: I almost exclusively used my own reloads since 15 years old and I appreciate the difference it makes. I love the level of reassurance that each round will count! If it doesn't - I have only myself to blame!

What ever happened to people valuing quality? On the other side of the coin what happened to companies charging a fair price and giving good value? When it all boils down, all you have is your Companies Reputation. :!:

Making cheap crap to win a segment of the market is just bad business sense. Companies should target groups of people who appreciate and depend on their brand name :idea: We all send 1000's on the sport from nice guns, licences, clothing, gear, club fees etc.... What's a few more bucks on ammo?

That's my $0.02 worth.
 
i gave up the bulk packs for the the challenger handicap target load. the winchester stuff would occasionally stove pipe, and seemed to burn a lot dirtier then the challenger stuff, which i've had no problems with.
 
so far i have used, some cheap Wally-world winchester stuff and it ran through my Mossy 835 alright although it stunk like sulfur(only about 15-20 rounds). some federal "field & Range" from flat tire, and untill yesterday it worked fine, i found a round that must of got a 1/2 load of powder and it only went pop (about 200 rounds of that so far). i picked up 2 cases of Kent one is Velocity diamondshot with the blue hulls with high brass, used one box of that so far and it worked great, the other case is upland something i forget haven't tried them yet though there in a red hull with a short brass base into it picked the kents up for $38.60 IIRC plus tax i can grab the product number later if anyone cares for it
