A general question for the Walther P-38 experts.

What lengths do P-38 wartime pistols come in?

Are there 6" long barrels

I have never seen a 6" bbl, and of everything I have read so far, this was never manufactured.

Standard is the 4.75" bbl (actually in metric but 4.75" is close enough).

That doesn't mean someone tooled one up in a gunsmith shop and fitted it to a P.38, but it's not likely.

I think Lugers (P-08) came in the longer barrel and might have been
called Artillery model.

I'm sure some Luger collectors will chime in on that if I'm wrong.

But I've never seen P-38 with anything but the standard length barrel.

I've seen 3 types of barrel lengths for P38's/P1's. There's a P4 which has a slightly shortened barrel compared to the original, usually a Police rework, the P38K where the barrel was reduced to the slide (used by the KSK throughout the 60's) and a rare P1 SD (Schalldämpfer) which features a muzzle attachment device for a sound supressor.

Yes, but are any of these longer than standard?
The poster is wondering about a 6" barrel for a P-38 and I don't think
such a creature exists...

I will try to get some pics up, But it is not mine yet.

Its an AC44 and has the german stamps all over it. The eagle with the #238. It all matches. Does the barrel have a serial # on it as well?

Im trying to determine if its an original barrel or a bubba'd P-38

I would hate to lay out the cash and find its a fake. There were some documents that are supose to come with it and a great story....but im buying the gun not the story. but so far all the info on the Gun matches Historical records that I can find on the web.

AC -- means it was made at the Walther factory
(some were made at a Mauser factory and others at Spreewerke)

The 41 means it was made in 1941 so the finish should be OK. The 44 and 45 can be crappy.

Damn, my P-38 book is at home!

I'd go for it. I haven't heard of a great deal of bubba'd P.38's. I'm sure there are a few parts guns out there, but more than likely in the US where demand is much higher.

The serial no. on the bbl would be just under the bbl (but part of the bbl, proper). And yes, that's the whole serial number.

BUBBA! Where ya been, Bubba! :p:p:p

I'm curious where the barrel comes from though... perhaps a gunsmith job.

AC44's were pretty roughly made (I used to have one, notice the rough machine marks) so Bubba must have thought this would be a good project gun for his "target P.38".

What's the serial number under the bbl (as in the pic I posted earlier)? Or is there even a serial number stamped there?

The Walther HP was available before the War with a 6-inch barrel, so it is likely that a few P-38s could have been fitted with them. And there are HPs around that have been misidentified as P-38s.

Properly speaking, a German military P-38 will be set up ONLY with the normal barrel, and in 9mm, but a commercial gun could be longer or shorter or even in a .30-calibre. Just wish I could find one of the .45ACP ones that were advertised (but never made).
