Hi,
Newbie to handguns here. Just took delivery of my first handgun, a Norinco M93 that is more for the wife and kids, and am eagerly awaiting my S&W M&P9 and my first permits. I would like to get another .22 target pistol a little more to my sized hands and I am looking at either used Ruger Mark 2's or a new Mark 3. I found a shop in southern Ontario that is selling the Walther SP22's for $349. How do they stack up against the Rugers? Are they similar sized, reliable etc?
Thanks for any help,
Glen

From what I've read here over the years- avoid the Walther P22 and the Sig Mosquito. Both have serious problems.

I was also eyeing a Walther SP22 M4. I was surprised of the pricing. An M4 for under $ 500 which was half of the listed price when it first came out 3-4 yrs ago. It turned out that these series (SP22-Mx) was not mfd by Walther. It was mfd by UMAREX. Google the exploded view and you will notice the internals to be a little flimsy. M4 seems to be the better out of the SP22-M series with a match barrel and a target grip. But still a lot of issues south of the border. Try searching for SP22 quality issues. Ruger is a stable platform, S&W 41 is considered near match grade and very accurate. I got myself a Browning Buckmark Contour URX, solid, nice trigger and balance. Reliability wise, Ruger will take any 22LR ammo including standard velocity and HV bulk packs. Not sure of Walther and S & W. I have yet to take by Buckmark to the range so I cannot comment any further except for its build.

My wife owns a Ruger MK III Competition with a 6" barrel :)

She found it very accurate and reliable but she always complains about how difficult is to pull the bolt ears or to operate the bolt stop. Once she broke one her nails... And I had to listen about it for the remaining of the day. I somewhat fixed the issue with a nice cleanup and lubrication.

Another issue was the factory sights, but most likely because she is left eye dominant but right-handed. We fixed that using the a SPARC red dot attached to rail Ruger provided with the gun.

In a nutshell, we do recommend the Ruger as must have .22LR pistol.

Buy the Ruger. Quality versus some POS Walther that's going to die eventually. Good luck wearing the Ruger out.
Alternatively, you could also buy a Buckmark. :)

Got to check out the Walther. Turns out it is too small for my hands anyway.
Still eyeballing a couple of used Rugers = a Mark 1 American Independence 200th Anniversary model at a gun shop and a Mark 2 from a local guy.
We'll see!!
