I'm looking at purchasing a .22 air gun for hunting squirrels and possibly crows at a friend's place. I've never owned an airgun and shot one only very briefly a few years ago. I'm aware of this 'artillery hold' but have never practiced it.

While perusing the options offered by Airgun Source Canada, I came across the Walther Terrus and Diana 280 Classic in .22 for $349 and $369 respectively. I know one can get Crosman's, Gamo's and the like for less money, but I'm a firm believer in 'buy once, cry once'. Does anyone have firsthand experience with either springer, or AGS, the dealer? What would be a good brand of pellets to try in regards to accuracy and performance on game?

You are right, don't know the Walther but should be fine and Diana are good. Much better buy than a Crosman. You will need to experiment with different pellets to find the one it likes. Try H&N, JSB or RWS and stick with the dome shaped ones.
As for the hold, again experiment with how firmly you hold it. I have seen videos of people saying you should hold a springer very loosely with an open palm but I find my HW77 prefers a fairly firm grip. In fact, I nearly gave up on it pursuing this elusive artillery hold until I discovered that.

By the way, don't dismiss 177. I read Pete Wadeson's book years ago which made the point that shot placement is the main thing and 177 is more forgiving regarding trajectory. With a heavy enough pellet, it still delivers plenty of energy.

Numerous sources claim the Walther is an Umarex product produced in Germany. It certainly looks good, and seems to strike a nice balance of quality and price. I'm not in a huge rush to buy, so hopefully my local dealer comes across one of each to handle.
