Want a .17 HMR

Thanks for all the info guys! It looks like I'm looking at some Savage and CZ rifles in the near future. If .17 ends up not providing enough "pop" I will consider the .223 as my next purchase.

BTW nice rifle Lionhill

OK...i looked at some guns at WSS and Russel's. I'm down to Marlin vs. Savage. They are within 10$ of each other so basically i want the best of the two. Which one do you guys think is better? The marlin has a heavy barrel which could be a big plus, however, the marlin does not seem to come with a synthetic stock which i do prefer. The savage has the synthetic and also an "accu trigger" which i can't tell if its actually better or not. What do you guys think? Thanks.

You have to go down an handle them and see them firsthand. What one guy likes, another may not. My experience with shopping for Marlins and Savage's rimfires was that I didn't like the look of the synthetic stocks with blued metal. I thought they looked kind of cheap and rough. By the time you buy one with nice wood and stainless to make it look half decent, you can afford to buy something better. Ended up with a Ruger 77 in 223, which I thought was a lot more gun for the money. Now that I'm interested in a rimfire again, I'm going for a CZ. Look at it this way, better guns hold their value better as well.

My CZ 452 varmint is awsome I wouldn't trade it for any savage or marlin. My comments on the .17hmr cartridge, fantastic little cartridge, shoots like a laser. I hit gophers from 30yds to 130yds with very little difference in aiming points. Look out for the wind, as soon as the wind blows I pick up my .22 mag or .222. That tiny 17gr bullet takes off in a bit of wind.

I've got a Marlin heavy barrel and its deadly accurate. My .223 is cheaper to shoot with factory ammo though. I also have a .204 supervarmint Tikka that only leaves a red vapour on a good prairie rat hit.

It's not hard to find 17 ammo for 24-25¢ a round or less. Where do you find varmint grade 223 for $5/20?

What's the best price you've seen for a brick of 500 .17's?

2 years ago, $100 taxes in.

1 year ago, $110 taxes in.

Both instances were the second brick in less than a week. Find the smaller, non-catalogue places and see if you can deal on volume.:)

If ammo price is some consideration-you might want to still consider a savage .17m2-a very easy 100-125m 1 shot 1 kill and $.16/round isin't bad-except for those 400 gopher days in southern saskatchewan...
For the price it's the most fun factor for the buck i've ever had!!:sniper:

Savage's can come with bull barrels too ;)
I'm quite happy with my 93R17FV (synthetic stock, blued bull barrel).
The accutrigger is still new to me, but quite a bit of fun to play with.

P.S. Terrible picture... I know...

I go with a heavy barrel Savage... are there none in stock in the usual places, or are you limited by funds? I'm assuming you're factoring in cost for a scope? If not, I have one I can sell ya!

Slightly off topic...but the wood on my Savage 93R17 is one of the nicest wood I've ever seen on a rifle under $250. I had always understood that the Mk II (of which I owned two) and other rimfires they make except for the Classic was just a walnut stained wood...not real walnut. But the extensive figuring and grain od my 93R17 stock looks like it is real walnut...like the nicer finished CZ.

Anyone else out there with an exceptional stock on their Savage rimfires? The other two I had were nowhere near as nice as this one.

Oh yeah...the 93R17 does have a heavy barrel.

im wondering where people are buying these super cheap .223 varmint cartiges? the bulk FMJ stuff, which unless you are miles from anything and anyone i wouldnt use on gophers, is 40c a pop when you can find it. 7.62x39 is the same deal, steel core or steel jacketed ammo is going to go a long way past where the gopher is

I thought I would update you guys on what I ended up with. Here is my Marlin 917VR, I have only shot it once but I was quite happy with the performance of the .17HMR vs jugs full of water.

Im not running down your marlin but I had read that the marlins had a feeding problem from the clip, maybe thats not true what is your experience? Thanks for any info.

Looks nice! Is that the 7 round mag? Can you get larger ones? Tough to reload the mags?

I look forward to watching rodents explode with you.

yep, a 7 rounder, I don't think they make mags that are larger, but i could be wrong. The other mag it came with is a 4 rounder.....so I may be needing a few extra mags! We are definitely going to be destroying those gophers with a .17hmr and a .223 going. Too bad we are going to get snow this weekend otherwise I would suggest we slay some on Saturday.

I have only put 30 or so rounds through it so far, it fed like a dream...for what its worth. The mags seem to be well made as far as rimfire mags go. I have read that some marlin models have feeding problems on occasion; this model seems good to go. :)

what model of bi-pod would that be?

I have the same gun in the stainless steel version with carbon fibre stocks.
Marlin 983ss-cf

I'm using a rockmount bi-pod on her....its basically a Harris, maybe not as strong, but the .17hmr has pretty much no recoil. My m14 has not done any harm to it either.
