disclaimer: I own more scopes than rifles :)

...but with the tax refund coming...

I would like a light low mag scope for my Ruger American Ranch 300BLK and/or Ruger 77/357
(I like the looks of straight objective scopes)

Requirements:
- hunting scope for max 200yds
- lightweight
- some kind of ballistic reticle (none of the above is flat shooting)
- good glass (the woods around are dark and deep)
- $700 or less (preferably much less)
- 1" tube (the 77/357 comes with proprietary 1" rings)
- available in Canada

So far I found:
- Nikon M-223 1-4x20 DOA600 $400
pros: cheaper, some say great glass, doesn't need a battery, apparently comes with flip-up caps
cons: 14oz, no illumination, the specs are unclear if it's 1/4MOA click or 1/2, funny reticle

- Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4x20 Firedot $650
pros: 9.6oz, illuminated reticle
cons: $$$, needs a battery (that usually runs out when you need it), non standard turret clicks.
 
I just ordered a Ruger American Ranch 5.56/.223 and was interested in the Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 3-9x40mm, I think it would be a good combo with this rifle as it has the P5 dials configured to this caliber. Following for interest or advice:)
 
I got the 1.25-3.9x20 firedot model (actual specs)
Pros: incredibly light and clear
Cons: price, 2.5mil dots, not much usable over 100m

What type and height of rings did you go with ?
The only concern with price is how much you tell your wife it cost vs what it actually cost :)

I'm a big fan of Burris Signature Zee rings so that's what I used in medium.
This is a 20mm scope with 1" tube

I tried to find the info on the Korth website regarding pricing but no dice. On their FAQ page they give you the address to send scopes to for repairs and the reticle options. They don't specifically list the B&C as an option but a call to them would clear it up. I imagine they don't want to put the more upper-end reticles like TMR and SPR in the lower end scopes. They say the service takes 5 days but for actual turn around you would have to confirm the current work load with them. As I recall the cost was something like $70 last time I saw it but that's not posted now. Again, a phone call could clear that up. The LRD or LRV reticle would be just about perfect for what you want. But Leupold does have 12 pages of reticles on their site so you might go a little cross-eyed before you choose one!
 
Compact scopes are preferred on my hunting rifles. For reduced weight and handier feel. The Burris Timberline 4x28mm has good clarity, brightness and eye relief.
