Howdy, from e-town. I'm a beginner shooter, been shooting for 32 years but never learnt the real basics and how to do it right so I have to learn from scratch. I want to go for sheep this year so if anyone wants to recomend a good caliber I will be listening. If anyone knows of some one teaching long range shooting I would be intrested in taking some courses.

Welcome aboard.

You'll get more advice than you can probably handle,
and I'll be the first to chime in with 270WSM.
Submit your question in the "Hunting" forum - you'll get
a lot more response there.

270WSM, 28O REM, 284WIN, 7MM Rem Mag, 7mm08 Rem. All these are good for high country humting. I use the latter two, 7mm Rem Mag has the punch but my Stevens 200 in 7mm08 proved light enough for all the high country hunting that I did last season (Goat). 8lbs total weight loaded and ready to go. If it's going to be your first high country hunt, make sure you keep the weight of your rifle in mind. Lighter overall weight makes you feel it at the range when your sighting in but when your shooting (hopefully) one shot at an animal, you don't feel it anyway. Don't forget , to also keep in mind the weight of the meat coming back dow off the mountain;)

me and a friend both use 300 wsm for hunting sheep elk deer and bear
when your hunting sheep you can get a shot at any of these animals
i think finding a gun that will carry on your shoulder (sling) very easily
and has a minamum weight is more important than the caliber
I would look into the win featherweights, kimber montanas, browning stainless stalkers or the rem titaniam or some kind of mountain rifle
If you get the chance before you buy the gun put on a pack and sling the gun and see how it rides

To shoot well, get a .22 and some small targets. Practise from all the positions you would expect to use when hunting. The more trigger time you have, the better shooter you will be.

Thanks for all the advice, I have a BLR in7mm Rem Mag but it sucks to carry with a pack, heavy and awkward, the trigger sucks but I love it because it was my first HiPow rifle. I want a gun I can put a military type sling onto that allows the gun to slung infront, but I dont know what they are called. I did get a decent .22 last year but I have not spent enough time practicing.
