I have an old double sxs 12 guage that i want to carry easier in the bush so I want to chop the barrells down. What is the overall legal length for a shotgun? I believe its 18.5 inches for the barrells so ill leave them at 19 inches. So how long does the whole gun have to be? Thanks.

Kyle

Before you do anything hasty what make is the shotgun? It would be terrible to cut down a gun that might be of some value. I've seen more than one classic shotgun butchered by a cowboy action shooter who wanted a short gun. :(

The answer to your question is the barrel must be more than 18" and the over all length more than 26 inches.

Does that make the shotguns such as the Norinco 14" restricted? Or is it that if it's already above 18inches you can't chop it lower?
If its a factory barell like the norc hp9 it is not restricted.

Overall the gun has to be over 26 inches.Your right about barell length. You can-not chop it below 18.5.

Wrong. 18.5 is semi-auto rifles. Shotguns is 18.0".

It's sadly quite unclear in the regs due to the wording, but 18.0 is fact. It's clear in the FRT tables, the verifyers course, the CFO fact sheet, etc.

Please do not "chop" an old SxS. They are very often worth more than what you would pay for a new Maverick 88 - which would be a fine brush gun. Some times a LOT more.
