Hello I want to cut my barrel to 18.5 inches, anyone got any advice? I mean does it screw with the cycling of the action any?
I live in Fredericton NB does any one know who would be a good person to talk to about getting it done locally?

I found that there was a bit of pressure loss once I had mine chopped. Now and then the bolt would short stroke when firing Norinco ammo. The hammer functioned, but would drop on an empty chamber.

I also learned that my barrel wasn't bored out in the true center of the barrel. Once threaded, it looked a bit odd. Also, I got burned by the place out in BC that chopped and threaded mine because they took the threads right up the shoulder that the crush washer sits against. Instead of a clean 90 degree shoulder, the threads created a bit of a ramp which caused the crush washer to partially ride up the barrel. The m14 barrel is thinner then an AR, so it will naturally have a smaller shoulder to sit against. The combination of off center threads and the lack of a clean shoulder made things worse.

Who cut/crowned and threaded your barrel in BC?
- expect some velocity loss
-"might" become sensetive to some ammo, norinco ammo has caused a few issues with the short rifles in general.
Esentially a short rifle should have close attention paid to gas port alignment and piston function.

Then there is the issue of a front sight as the standard flash hider won't work.

I've chop modded 263 norinco and polytechs, since Jan 2009.
Of those, FOUR reported issues, 3 solved those issues by selecting an ammo the rifle liked.

My bench is closed as I am now under contract with a special set of rifles that I can't openly discuss online :D
I'll be back later in the year in a far better position to serve the community reliably and in a timely fashion.

Doc, pm sent.

Not to say chopping a barrel is bad, but with any alteration, things could get messed up. As long as you maintain a "project" mentality then even when it goes wrong, at least you learned something. Buying Norinco and then playing with them has been an education. At worst you could do what I'm doing and simply cut your losses and re-barrel. They go for about $100 on EE.
