Want to Scope an M44 (PU scope)

Awesome. Checked out west rifle. I might be going through them for scope.

Does anyone know if there will be any trouble mounting this scope to an M44?

Lets just say it's not as easy as scoping a 700 ;)

the scope sits in a mount that slides onto a rail - if the rail doesn't mount "just-so" you'll have to either grind or shim to get things square as there isn't enough adjustment in the scope to compensate for being out of tolerance very much. I recommend shims as you can't come back from too much grinding.

I had a machine shop do my parts bin M38 - well worth the $150 when it was only a couple clicks up and a few over to get bang on the small circle, and they drilled me out for hex head screws.

Hmmm. I see.

I might just go with the 1891/30 then.

I'm just worried someones going to scope a p.o.s nagant - just to move the rifle.

I am not questions anyones integrity - especially westrifle - as I have ZERO dealings with them, or any knowledge whatsoever - nor is this comment directed at them.

It's just a practice I have heard been used by gun sellers from all over the place.

ALL of our vendors have the odd issue. It's comes hand in hand with the product they sell. These rifles are purchased in bulk, usually stacked and strapped to pallets like so much fire wood. Westrifle has good stuff - I have x2 unrefurbed SKSes from them. Very happy with what I got. IIRC "westrifle" is also his CGN handle - check his trader rating.

I think if I was to ever do it again, I would just buy one of the sniper clones. I did mine only because I already had the rifle and the scope came cheap. Figgure $300 for the scope by the time it gets to you, $279 for the rifle, and $150 for machine work - You've just paid more than Westrifle sells the clone for.

I would just buy the westrifle - lots of opportunity to screw up doing it yourself. I did mine, but that was before all these clones were available.

Edit - also keep in mind a PU mounted M44 will lose value, since they have no historical basis. Basically the scope and base would retain value but the gun would lose $50-$100 in value, and the cost of mounting would be lost too.

Yes, some 44 were scoped at the later date. But I believe those were different scopes. Also keep in mind SVD pushed out Mosin out of service and the scope system a bit different on those :).
I think 44 is a very nice rifle do not get me wrong, but they are different rifle in my mind.

I have considered the scout option. Everything I read about it indicates it doesn't hold zero very long at all. I guess I am really interested in having something designed for the job..

It looks like the 1891/30 PU option is a good deal too. Thanks though!

That is true - depends what you're looking for in the gun.

Frankly I love the 91/30 PU setup. Sold off my m38 and M44 as I was happier with the increased long range accuracy of the 91/30 and the PU setup is super super solid and very intuitive.

Yes aluminum mounts do that. Westrifle does NOT sell aluminium for that reason and this is why it holds zero. We buy it at original factory that those were produced at many years back. If we really want to we can make it look like original (throw it in dirt for couple hours and sell it on ebay for $500 or more). Mount does not have any stamps so technically you can not tell the difference. Unless you worked at the factory and know small difference.
Aluminum (the one I got was) and fragile. If it got bumped it lost zero.

...I was talking about scout mounts. :p
