Want to upgrade from my 10/22!

I've taken my 10/22 to the range about 4 or 5 times now and I have a better idea of what I would like to get into, but some advice would still be of great help!

1)What kind of routes could I go with bigger rifles? .22 is fun but I wouldn't mind something with a tad more kick and is more suitable for 100 yard range. I've had .223, .243, and .222 Hornet recommended to me so far. What models/brands should I be considering?

2)I am thinking of replacing my 10/22 with another 22 since it doesn't feel very... 'tight'? My scope rail keeps coming loose (teflon tape seems to work for now...), the trigger is rather mushy, the length is a tad bit short, and the gun keeps getting small patches of rust on it. I've oiled generously but I can't tell if it is because the storage area is just too humid or the material is not very well made/protected.

What kind of .22s are out there that may solve some or all of these problems? I've heard Savages are great for the price, but I might consider spending a little extra for a nicer gun too.

If you want to stay in the .22 caliber, you could move up to the Savage Mark II TR line. I've seen a couple at my range and the folks are pretty happy with them. The only thing is that they can be hard to find. If you want to go center fire then the options are endless...but .223 is relatively cheap to shoot and pretty fun. Good luck with your hunt and do some fondling at your local gun shop to see what feels good to you.

Ruger 10 22 upgrade

I have a 1972 edition that has a Shillen barrel (sporter contour) and a Jard trigger that shoots tight 1/4 inch groups at 25 meters using match ammo. I had originally tried a Timmney trigger that I replaced becase it started to double tap.

I don''t think you can do much better than the 10-22 unless you want to get a high quality bolt rifle. I would love to have this one ...but cost is out of my reach.
