Am looking at the feasability of building a custom 30BR on an AR15 platform
and need to know some specific details regarding stresses and gas timing before I begin.I would like someone who is knowledgable and able to comfirm and assist in designing this build.
If not familiar with the 30BR ,a good amount of basic information is available on this at 6BR.com.
It's just begs to be built in an AR platform!!!
Please contact me with your thoughts.
Thanks
Gord

Gord I think Remington have already pretty much nailed this down with the 30 AR.
What more do you hope to achive??
Problems with a build like this are the fact that it is a BLACK rifle so therefore not as commercially viable. For personal use I don't see issues as the Rem product already works. Unless I'm missing something. I would doubt that this type of gun would operate at the pressures that some of the benchrest guys push their 30BR's though. Regards Randy

Exactly Randy.
The 30AR is not in the same ballpark as the 30BR (JMHO) as I run the 30BR in bolt guns from BR matches to shorter range target guns.
Increadably accurate, great ballistics and more than what the 30AR has to offer.I am not in the slightest interested in a commercially viable rifle ,just a personal use project like the rest of my builds.I need to find out if an AR15 platform can take the 30BR loaded at
benchrest or close to it loads and stay together.... safely.

Gord the 30AR is just a 30br On steroids or so they say. I shoot benchrest too (with you!)I was just drawing the comparison, that if the Ar15 will handle the RAR then it should handle the BR loaded to similar pressures at least. I did a quick search last night and looks like some Of our American cousins have done this already. What type of venue would this type of gun be used for? regards Randy

I am no AR expert but have followed this platform with interest over the years.

Isn't there a concern with opening the bolt face that big? I hear that there are issues with cracking bolt heads and lugs with the 6.5 Grendel which has a smaller case head. Wouldn't going larger aggrevate this problem?

Maybe Rem/Bushmaster/DPMS have a solution to this. Maybe the bolt is bigger and the receiver modified to suit????

As for port pressure, I think that the system in place is already rate limiting. The gas tube will only allow so much gas to pass into the operating system. You could of course restrict this further if cyclic speeds go too high with either a stronger buffer spring and/or making the gas tube longer or smaller.

My guess is that adding an allen bolt in the gas block would do wonders at restricting gas flow and would also be tunable. I just don't see the AR platform wanting to run at 70,000psi.

Let us know how the project goes...
