Has anyone done a review on the Chiappa 1886 Ridge Runner .45-70 12" barreled Takedown carbines yet?

Do they feed reliably?

What is the action like smooth/rough?

What kind of accuracy are you getting?

What loads have you tried?

Do you use the factory ghost ring sights or do you mount a scout scope?

I have to wonder what the benefit may be of a takedown lever gun with such a short barrel. A barrel of 18 or 20 inches would take down to a package no longer than the 12-inch gun, and still provide better performance, longer sight radius and probably better handling.

When I had a Ranch Hand, I tried the full-length stock on it and it was a lot of fun, but that was a solid-frame gun. The shorter the barrel, the shorter the package it would pack into. A takedown might as well have a barrel the length of the buttstock/receiver unit, since that is the limiting factor in how short of a package it will fit into.

At the price they were going for there's no excuse for lemons...... I don't think I've seen a single review so far.

My thoughts too.

I am actually interested in possibly purchasing one of these take down carbines because I understand the value of a short 12" - 14" barrels.

One of the reasons I haven't jumped on purchasing one yet is I have heard stories of rough actions and poor/unreliable feeding issues on other Chiappa 45-70 lever actions.

Due to this I'm not about to drop this kind of monies without getting some kind of confirmation that these issues have been addressed.

HAAHAA I was hopping to see sumthing Positive About the ridge runner
I guess I will chalk it up to a great idea but poor execution
Im glad I never picked one up bit it still leaves me wanting a short barrel rifle for moose and Bear

Seeing as no one will post any kind of reviews I decided to take the day off work today and go into Wanstalls and check out one of these rifles.

They had one left in stock that I was able to check out.

I have to say I was surprised at the weight it was heavier than I expected.

The action was not smooth but it wasn't overly rough either nothing a bit of shooting wouldn't smooth out mind you like my Marlin 1895GS in 45-70 I'd probably send it into Rusty Wood Trading Company for an action job anyway so this isn't an issue.

The butt stock/forend were easy to grip and hold firmly in the hand the thin 1/4" recoil pad left a lot to be desired I would swap it with a Kick-Eez magnum recoil pad probably before I even took the first shot but once again I do that with any/all of my heavier recoiling firearms.

The Skinner ghost ring sights were very nice looked good especially with the red fiber optic front post I do prefer a larger ghost ring though.

The short barrel was as expected very fast to get into action for those complaining about the length of these short barrels I recommend you handle one of these rifles to feel how nicely they point and balance before condemning this package.

I have one issue with this gun that at this time I can't change same as my other short 14" barreled T/C Contender carbines that is the vision in my right eye is so crappy now the short sight radius doesn't work for me I have to use a scope = but Chiappa already has this covered as well I checked out the scope base on an 18.5" barreled Chiappa that they had in stock and was totally impressed.

So final impressions overall this was one very cool short/fast handling/powerful combo is it worth $2000 that will all depend on you for me right now = just put out $20,000 on another company truck a couple weeks ago I have to pass just don't have a spare $2000 this month for guns but someones not as tight as me because someone has already put it on hold since I looked at it.

It would be a interesting to see the next bach being in sumthing like 444 marlin case hardened take down

Stainless 460 for me if we're wishing...
A few less greenbacks too...

What did you think of the coated stock Camp Cook. Did it look/feel like a painted wood stock or did it look/feel like a quality Hogue or similar rubber stock?

Cam,
I've asked in past Whanstall threads but never got a reply..... Are they tapped for the scope rail? Do they come with the rail included or is that an "extra"?
It looks like they are tapped from one picture I saw and for the price a rail included would be a nice consideration.

Stock felt good forend wasn't as wide as my Marlin 1895GS felt like a smoother Hogue.

Yes it was tapped for the rail I do not think they have the rail separate in stock but I definitely agree the rail would be a very nice addition especially at that cost.

Also the rail on the other Chiappa 45-70 I held had a ghost ring sight on it very nice looking setup which would be the same one that would fit this rifle.
