Hi 4runner
My 2cents may not mount to much but I'll submit it any ways.
Here in Australia no one shoots 9m any more and those who do have them can't get rid of them.Ever one has opt for the 38super are far superior bullet( sorry about that I got off the beaten track there for a moment. If you must shoot 9m them do one of two things.
1-shoot factory loads only
2-load your own useing jacketed stuff.
For 9m to go ok they need to be driven hard on the other hand you could
try (starting @ 5grs os w231 -10% start up and go from there.
Have fun

I don't have anything in my reloading manuals specifically using a 125gr LRN bullet and either Universal Clays, or Clays powder. The Hodgdon web site lists a load for a 125gr LCN bullet. I'm assuming this is a typo and should read LRN for lead round nose. I've contacted Hodgdon to confirm. That data reads as follows:

http://www.hodgdon.com/data/pistol/9mmluger.php
125 GR. LCN (Starting Loads)
DIA. .356"
COL: 1.125"

Longshot 5.0 1052 24,700 CUP

HS-6 5.9 1023 24,400 CUP

Universal 3.8 993 24,400 CUP

HP-38 3.9 1009 25,700 CUP

Titegroup 3.6 1002 22,900 CUP

Clays 2.9 899 22,700 CUP

125 GR. LCN (Maximum Loads)
DIA. .356"
COL: 1.125"

Longshot 5.7 1115 28,300 CUP

HS-6 6.6 1124 30,700 CUP

Universal 4.3 1096 31,300 CUP

HP-38 4.4 1086 31,200 CUP

Titegroup 4.0 1096 30,400 CUP

Clays 3.3 993 30,900 CUP

Here's some other 9mm loads that might interest you. I've used the Bullseye load below to good effect in my Beretta and Taurus 9mms. As with any load, step down 10% and work your way up.

125 grain Lead RN (.356" dia)
Bullseye 4.7 gr. 1,105 FPS
Unique 6.0 gr. 1,165
No. 2 4.2 gr. 1,002
No. 5 6.2 gr. 1,133
231 4.0 gr. 1,035
WSL 3.8 gr. 985
WSF 4.7 gr. 1,055

If you haven't already done so, go pick up a couple of good reloading manuals and compare the loads to what they have listed. Be safe and have fun!

X-man:

Never assume anything.

LCN = lead conical nose.

I've tried Clays and didn't like it, I couldn't get the velocity that I needed. Never used Universal.

I've found that the slower powders give me what I need. I now use HS6.

RePete.

Thank you all for the info. The reloading manual I have has nothing listed for 9mm lead and use of hodgdon products. It does have info for fmj. time for a new manual.

AUSSIEBOB,

Please BEWARE 4Runner:
5 grns of W231 for 9mm 125 grain bullet?
That's way too much for a start, in fact isnt that is way over the max for that type of bullet using W231?

Thanks RePete.

4Runner,

I am not sure if you are just starting to reload. If you are, I will recommend the Lyman 48th Edition Reloading Handbook. This book is very informative, dont get me wrong, this book is useful for new and experienced reloaders. Read the first 4 chapters before you start reloading, whch explains almost all the info you will need to start reloading.

Good Luck bro and relaod safely.
