Hi, would like to try the 6.5 Creedmoor caliber for my Accuracy International AT, and be able to swap it and my .308 factory barrel out. Cant find a supplier in Canada? Anybody have a source on a replacement barrel? Or someone who would make such a barrel in Canada?
Wolverine says no other caliber of barrels exist from AI, and Europtic in the U.S. has them, but long wait and a hassle to import. Thanks for any advice given...

Not sure who does them here, if anyone, but they can be turned from a blank. GA Precision makes them for people down in the US out of blanks.

Many gunsmiths don't know how to deal with the action being unitized to the chassis. They're used to fitting the action to the treads by threading it on and also using it to check the headspace. That won't work with the AI since the chassis will prevent it the action from being screwed on when the barrel is in the lathe. The threads need to be measured with wires and headspace is checked with a gage that threads onto the shank. One of these can be made with a piece of bar stock and a micrometer.

I suspect, and am hoping, that AI will come out with a 260 Rem barrel at some point for the AT as this caliber was previously offered in the AW.

If I can't find someone who has them, or a smith who can make me one here in Canada, then I might try and do the importing route, once I've sourced some barrels in the states. Long process though...
Also was thinking of ordering a 6.5 Upper for my JP AR10, but it's restricted, and would like the flexibility of non.

AINA (Accuracy International North America) has dave tooley chamber Bartlein blanks in various calibers, Euro Optic and Mile High sell them. Wolverine deals with AI (England), they don't offer these other calibers so our only option is to import them from the states. (Or have a smith here chamber and thread one but for the reasons mentioned above I would just import it, then just screw it on when you get it.)

Its not hard to chamber for an AI. Here is an example of a headspacing jig:

You just drop the GO gauge into the chamber, screw it onto the shank till it butts against the shoulder, and then measure the headspace with the micrometer. I just used a Hornady die micrometer in the one I built.

As mentioned AINA has Dave Tooley cut and chamber Bartlein barrels and available through Mile High, Euro Optic. There are also several other options in the US. AI has a much larger following in the US, why do you think AINA is in the US, although it should be AIUS as they only deal within the US, not North America. GA Precision is another option as they have been doing them for years and there are guys who have imported GA Precision rifles so a barrel should not be an issue. Tim "Moon" Roberts who used to work at GA Precision and now owns Crescent Customs is another option, OTM Tactical offers Bartlein barrels of various calibres for AI's and are chambered by Robert Gradous, Mark Gordon at Short Action Customs. I would go the route of importing a barrel rather than sending it to someone who has never done an AI and has experience chambering it to AI specs. The best barrel in the world is only as good as the guy doing the work.

Thanks for all the great information guys! I have talked with Jerry at Mystic Precision about building one and it may indeed be easier just to import one already made. It also does seem to be a faster, and actually cheaper way to go as well.
Has anyone ever imported a pre fab barrel for an AI? There is no restriction on importing the fabricated barrels? On Prophet Rivers Importing webpage, it says cannot import "sniper" stuff?? Not sure what that means? I take it that it doesn't apply to AI barrels?

All AI short action rifles use a 1.250" barrel shank. AW, AX or AT makes no difference they are the same.
The new ones now have milled flats up forward that's it. Just get an AW/AX barrel and put it in your AT.

AI factory short action calibers come in .260, 6.5X47, 7mm-08 and 308. Wolverine should be able to order any of these, if not I would call up sporting services UK.

The PSR/AXMC has a unique barrel mounting shank which is 1.450" (long action) so these will not work for you.

For any AI related stuff you are better off asking on Snipershide, that's where the info is. Just not enough guys that have AI's up here to draw info from.

Cheers,

Will the one screw quick change barrel system on the AT still work properly with an AW barrel?

Yes. The AT just has a receiver alteration (material removed at bottom of receiver) that applies pressure to the threads, holding the barrel after it has been screwed into the receiver.

Send AI an email, they are pretty good at getting back to you. You can also phone Mile High Shooting in the US. They won't be able to sell you stuff but they will answer your questions.

I have been wanting one for a year now. Maybe we can get a list of people who are interested and do a one time import of 10+ barrels. Count me in for 1, for sure.

I have wanted an AT rifle since I first heard about them. I too would like the option of buying a factory barrel in either 260 remington, 6.5x47 lapua or 7mm-08. I won't buy the rifle until I know for sure I can source the other barrels easily. A group buy would be pretty good. Sporting services uk does sell them but I haven't contacted them yet. Not sure about importing from UK. Rules?
