I was thinking about getting a .22 handgun for my next handgun and i was wondering about the walther p22 wondering the pros and cons about it and other .22 handguns

I like the p22 quite a bit, but find the grips a bit short for my hands. The one I tried cycled flawlessly with bulk walmart ammo. A bit snappy compared to the Ruger, Buckmark and Neos that I tried.

I just bought a Smith & Wesson 22a, still waiting for it to show up but read a lot of good reviews about it, pretty reasonably priced as well

S&W 22A goes for around $350 and their model 41 goes for around 3x to 4x that. I have the 22A and love it.

About a year ago I got a S&W 422. It's been a great gun to shoot and 100% reliable. I recently added an all stainless model 2206 with the shorter 4.5 inch barrel to the family since it looked so nice and uses the same magazines. Again although I've only shot about 250 to 300 rounds through it since getting it the gun has been 100% flawless. It's also nice that this family of models mimics the grip angle of the more regular pistols very well. So if one should show up for a decent price don't be afraid to jump in with both feet.

Can't comment on the others, but I loved my p22. I've heard and read everything about them being unreliable and having jams and FTE's. ONLY time I had ONE FTE and two FTF's was when I had no choice and borrowed some cheap ammunition from a fellow shooter as the range was out of the good stuff. Use good quality ammunition and keep it clean and they're GREAT guns. Fun to shoot, very snappy recoil compared to others I've shot, and still accurate. I could get 4" groupings or less at 15-20 yards.

Not to mention CHEAP to shoot! 500rds for $25 taxes in, can't go wrong.

Just my $.02

I've had a few 22 pistols, most had issues unless they were fed better ammo, CCI MiniMags and up. The only one that never hiccups is my Ruger MK II, no matter the ammo. Some don't like the style (Luger) but I don't think there's a more reliable 22 pistol out there. My $.02

I owned a S&W41 7.5"bbl with compensator. Got it mint from my father. It shot real nice and the fit/finish was premo. Also owned a Ruger 22/45 4.5"slab bbl. It had a few FTE's but problem was fixed with a VQ extractor. Didn't like the thin grip and strange field strip proc. Both .22lr's have long been sold as I moved into CF HGs.
For something different, I recently purchased a .22lr SA "cowboy" revolver (with an extra .22mag cyclinder)so my son can shoot cheaply as he's starting to put a dent in my wallet blasting my 38/357, 9mm, and .45ACP ammo. I think I'm going to enjoy this one as well...it'll be a nice match for the Octagon bbl Henry Lever:D.

These are my two favourites:

Top is a S&W Model 41 and bottom is a K-22 Masterpiece (the predecessor to the Model 17). Used 41s can be found for much less than the new ones.

Other good choices include:
-Ruger Mk II/III
-Browning Buckmark
-CZ Kadet
-SIG Sauer P226 .22 (not the Mosquito!)

I would stay away from the Walther P22, as they have a rather poor reputation. They are both finicky in what ammo they work with and the zinc (aka pot metal) slides are prone to breakage.
