Hey all.

I just came into a Rem 788 in 308 with a Sportco barrel and a worked trigger. I have done a lot of shooting/reloading with pistol but I am just starting out reloading rifle. The range i'm currently at only has up to 200yards and I was wondering a few things.

1. Is my current rifle up the challenge of shooting nice groups at 200+ yards and

2. What could you recommend to me as a resource and or some advice.

I have a lot of 4895 and some H335 powder.

I guess my goal is to maybe compete one day if only at a lower lvl.

Thanks.

Assuming you can work up a good load for it, much farther than 200 yds. H/IMR 4895 is great stuff for 147-168 gr projectiles.

As for resource, go through the "Sticky's" at the top of each forum, and use the search function to look for relevant threads. You'll likely find the question has been asked and answered.

My experience was that for me to learn the fundamentals of long range shooting, I had to find, and shoot with like minded shooters. There was no substitution for range time.
I would contact Murray@manitobarifle.ca. Apparently they shoot at the St Charles range which is situated on Saskatchewan Ave. West, just outside Winnipeg.

Your Sportco barrel was designed to shoot the 147 to 155 gr bullets, although it will shoot the 175 Sierra match very well, too.

With 155s, try 44gr of 4895 and work up from there. You should look for at least 2900 fps (assuming barrel is 28")

The 155s are very good to 1000 yards.

How important will ammunition be in this case for a begginer in LR shooting. I have been watching many reviews and reading about the different ammo 308 v. 6.5 mm Creedmoor, will availability present an issue? Speaking of store bought ammo here and not of hand loads. I ask because it will present a dilemma when purchasing the rifle and it seems there is a bit of a dichotomy when the subject arises.

Thanks. Its only 24inch but I will give those weights and charges a try. My range is only 200 yards but as I am starting out i'm sure that will be a challenge.

If you have good accuracy at 200m with a 155g bullet at around 2900 fps, you will be good to go at 800m and 900m,

45g-46g of Varget with a 155g bullet will shoot in every .308 rifle I have ever had any experience with.
