I would like to take my rem 742 and remove the shiny blueing and have it with a matter black finish. Can I just paint it with matte black paint? I have seen references from a special armour coat guy but who is this legendary fellow? Can anyone recomend the best paint to use that I can find at a crappy tire or home depot type of thing? I don't mind paying extra for better paint but I want to be able to get it asap. :)

You don'[t have to remove any bluing... just clean it well and spray it with Tremclad... it sticks quite well... when it marks up (and it will) it is easy to touch up. There are better paints [baked on] but there is no cheaper method...

"...high temp paint..." As in Engine paint. Crappy Tire. Take off the stock first and tape(masking tape) any parts you don't want painted. No paint on or in any spring. Be sure to completely de-grease too. You should sand the metal a bit as well.

Paint

I use a product called Zero Rust. It comes in a spray can. It is basically a primer that drys on a flat black.I scuff the said firearm with fine steel wool prior to the application. This paint is good for exposure to 3600 hrs of salt spray. When it scratches only the scratch will rust. The rust will not get under the primer. You can find it at a body shop or sometimes at Canadian Tire. I spray it on very lightly for 3 or 4 coats. I have used it on shotguns and various 22,s and my .270. Good luck

black oxide

Try using black oxide. You should be able to get it through a tooling supply store.Remove the original finish and clean with rubbing alcohol then polish with a clean rag being careful not to touch the metal with your hands.Dip the parts in the black oxide and swish around. When you have an even coat wipe dry imediately and rub in a coat of oil or it will rust quickly.I have done a couple of shotguns with excellent results.
