I'd love to get my hands on one of these gorgeous rifles, but that isn't going to happen any time soon, sadly. So I'll just build my own :)

I've been going through this thread:
http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=225878

which has some good tips and sources for parts, but naturally I have some questions, as it is alot to dig through.

The first and most important is: What is the best base rifle to build off of? I'll be honest, I just want it to look similar, and look good with a POSP scope on it. It doesn't have to have a similar action, or even be Russian in origin.

my next question: How accurate can I make one of these?

My goal I suppose is to have a Russian styled nail driver. I appreciate that using an SKS or VZ58 or CZ858 will limit this somewhat, and that the stones are right in saying "you can't always get what you want", but I can try.

Another question: Is this site any good for scopes? Anyone dealt with them? http://www.posp.ru/

And last, for now: can i get the those stocks left-handed?

thanks in advance for the info.

from what I understand the best route to take for an SVD clone is an SVT 40. they're very similar, and actually use the same round. just be sure if you do choose to go this route, you post all of your progress both here and in the milsurp forums... pure entertainment listening to those guys whine and complain every time "bubba" has his way with a surplus rig. GO FOR IT!

i've been wanting to do something similar as well, i've looked at a lot of actions to try and see what i can dress up to look similar, but my requirement is also similar size/ballistics so at the risk of being laughed off the forum, i was thinking a browning BAR could be dressed up to do the job.

it would likely be more work than the cz/sks/svt and require much more custom machining but in .308 would be ballistically similar to the 7.52x54R round the original used, and the basic shape of the reciever is there, with the ejection port being located in roughly the right place.

as for the detail on the reciever i'm unsure if the best choice would be to engrave it in a way that emulates the embossed surfaces or to mill something to mount around the receiver that does.

I'm not sure how much you plan to build yourself and how much you expect to be able to source parts for, so far my build is currently stuck at "i have a dragunov style wood stock" but have run out of funding for this project right now.

*edit*
as for the mag i was looking at the new FN variant of the BAR and it has a proper detachable mag, i haven't seen this up close yet but am willing to bet it could be adapted to fit a standard BAR and take off that dumb hinged one it has

*edit 2* i believe
http://www.interammo.com ( a site sponsor) can help you out with the scopes

BAR looks like it might be doable...I will have to investigate further. What about an M14? it's semi auto in a decent caliber (.308 as well) and are pretty moddable from what I have seen. There are even PSOP scopes that go on weaver mounts.

I've seen SVTs converted as well. I'll be honest, I am hesitant to bubba one, I have an SKS and am horrified at what some people do to these classics. But that won't necessarily stop me. Any idea on the accuracy of an SVT?

I would dress up an m305

If you really want a tack driver that just looks like the dragon. I would go that way. there is way more work that has been done to make this platform accurate so you wont have to poke and hope to get results.

Valmet is out of my budget by far. Perhaps a Russian tack driver is not in my future. I'll still build a a Dragonov clone for fun, and will get something else for precision shooting.

damn this hobby is expensive.

I've heard of some basically just building a stock set, and if they can find them, modifying SVD magazines to fit the SVT.

Just look around. It has been done.

Personally, I have a soft spot for the original SVT 40 since it is one of my favorite wood-stocked battle rifle configurations (I've always liked the look of wood-stocked semi auto rifles and carbines with protruding 10-shot mags, like the Ljungmann and Hakim), but I wish you luck should you chose to undertake this project

the SVT-40 is the obvious choice, i've not been impressed with the accuracy of it, and its arguably just as much work the receivers are similar mechanically but visually when you take that thing out of the stock its nothing like a dragunov.

I've seen the SVT conversion done on this forum I can't find the one i'm thinking of to link you but i'm pretty sure the username i Dmitri, from what i read about the conversion it seemed like just as much work,

Though roadblock raises an interesting point, watching the milsurp guys cry about the horror of bastardizing another SVT is hilarious, and you will find more support and pre-made parts you can use going this route

as for the M14 the receiver is very much not the same shape, and would basically have to be hidden and placed inside a facade that covers the entire thing also the gas system runs under the barrel the SVD it runs above the barrel, so it'd either require some modifications there or more work hiding it

Get a Globco Mohawk Carbine and make it into your Dragunov clone. :D That way 'those horrified members' will be more banal about it. :p

Medved-3 is the closest you can get. It's actualy a hunting version of SVD...shares many parts...and it's non-restricted :D

M-3_large.jpg

looks suitable. where can I find one and what's the average cost?

EDIT: Clicked the link in your sig after I saw you were a dealer, and see you sell it. That is a bit beyond my price range right now.
