Warfare Movie

Not to resurrect this, but now that it’s available on Prime: pretty damn good watch. I appreciated a lot of the intentional pacing/realtime elements. It’s essentially a play-by-play walkthrough shot like a horror movie.

The talking saws was good stuff. The TQ over the boot was dumb but sadly accurate. The show of force and overall sound design was pretty great. Opening scenes are hilarious in their own way.

I’d agree with the assessment that this isn’t what you’d traditionally expect from a “movie” but worth watching nonetheless.

Warfare is simply a "Troops in Contact" (TIC) event from start to finish with the complication of dead and injured from an IED blast. Not that much different from the day that I lost my legs to an IED in a complex Taliban ambush while mentoring Afghan soldiers on live combat operations. Anyone who actually traded rounds with the enemy will understand what I am saying. What looks like a "big deal" because they made a movie about it was actually just a typical mission gone pear-shaped due to self-inflicted compromise (the exterior claymores, th esniper mouse-hole in a home's wall visible and approachable from the street, etc).

War is horrible for many reasons. It can also be quite beautiful and highly addictive. That sounds contradictory, but it's true. Combat is a Fvck Around and Find Out (FAFO) type of sport where people get routinely, randomly and suddenly killed and wounded. There is little rhyme or reason to it all, which can make it all that much more alluring. Rolling the dice with literally everything on the line.....

BHD wasn't a "middle eastern" movie; it's set in Africa. But I get your sentiment. There's a lot of modern war movies set in desert environments that are boring AF.

The worst movie I've seen in my life, bar none, was Hyena Road. I actually went to the premiere at a soft seat venue and sat next to some of the soldiers "involved" in making that movie. It was absolute nonsensical low budget trash but they loved it, I guess cause they worked on it.

Anyway, Jarhead was a good movie. The Green Zone was pretty good too. The Kingdom was less a war movie and more a political movie with gunfights but it was cool. American Sniper would have been alright but the fact that Chris Kyle lied about a lot of the events portrayed sours it for me. I also enjoyed Three Kings, reminded me of a modern take on Kelly's Heroes.

I will probably check this movie out. Supposedly it's very authentic. We'll see.
If you want to see a truly horrendously done war movie, watch “Passchendaele”. Absolute garbage.

Looks and sounds like a movie I want to see. Regarding the poster, it will save me from buying those safety glasses. They did zero to keep mud from around his eyes lol.

Saw it, had to fast forward the last half because it sucked. Too jumpy. Trying way too hard to sound “military”. No context or the what and why. Rescue tank explodes out of nowhere. RPG? No . Grenade? No. C4? IED that somehow made its way under the tank? Yes! Movie is ####. 5/10

Found it super boring sure I'll give it points for projecting the trauma and distress of modern combat. But movies should be entertaining first and foremost at the end of the movie it's like uh ok so what.

Obviously real combat missions don't exactly have a true point (in a storied sense) or good outcome to it. But for a movie I need a plot or some kind of outcome even if a bad one. I feel like this movie just tells a rather boring story about a assault on a unit. It's nowhere near a movie like Saving Private Ryan, BHD, Generation Kill, or even Fury.

Bartok,

I've been in awe of your collection posts over the years (sadly now most are prohibs) I wondered how you ended up in the chair, now I know.

Thanks for your service man.

+1, pretty underwhelming for a modern day war movie.

I actually appreciated how they didn't have all of the Usual Hollywood war movie stereotypes. The young Sergeant who keeps a cool head and knows what to do in any given situation. The grizzled old Sergeant who has seen it all and is probably close to retirement (will probably get killed). The young guy who's wife/girlfriend has just had a baby and he can't wait to see his new family (will definitely get killed). The friendly black guy who shows the new recruit the ropes when everyone else is mean to him. The list goes on.

I know Warfare didn't exactly have a traditional linear storyline or much in the way of character development, but I personally still enjoyed it.
