Was about to buy the new Marlin 1895 Trapper 45-70 but at $1129.99 I'll pass.

I sold my Henry 45-70 to fund my new Tikka 308, plenty for black bear and deer, and was planning to purchase the new Marlin 1895 Trapper 45-70 16" barrel but looks like I'll be skipping on a Remlin again.

Sail has one in stock, SS with black stock, and the quick visual on the stock and fore grip's fit and finish was good and still has the floppy/sloppy trigger. Unfortunately store policy prevents working the action so I don't know how smooth it cycles but what I noticed right away was the front sight. It's not canted like past Remlins but it's not straight/ perpendicular to the barrel, the sight is at a slight angle pointed to the right. Also when aiming through the Skinner peep sight the rear dovetail filler blank IS slightly canted in relations to the front sight. Very disappointed. :(

This was just this particular rifle and not sure if others are like this but at $1129.99 or even on sale at some point I'll be skipping the Remlins again, not going to drive all over the Province looking for that perfect fit and finish Remlin.

Looks like I just stick to my 12" barrel 44 mag Henry lever action loaded hot with hardcast as my cabin rifle. :d

My new Marlin Trapper is great, no sight canting aligned correctly, trigger is slick. No play or creep in mine so I dont need to get a wild west kit. I like the skinner sights. I got rid of the white on the front blade sight. Shoots perfect! I like using 14grs TB and 405gr LFPs in my 4570s, sighted in 1" high at 50yds and its cloverleafing- much to my expectations. Price is abit pricy, but, considering getting a GG and getting the big loop, XS ghost sights, barrel chopping and trigger kit, you would end up paying the same or more...... so worked out good for me as that fits my needs.
 
The marlin triggers are all floppy(maybe not the old ones) this is not a flaw it's part of the design. And the Wild West kits are nearly pointless as a triggered job can be done with a flat head screw driver a brass punch and a set of honing stones.

Haven't shot mine yet but it cycles fine, trigger feels good and everything lines up like it should. I went over it with a fine eye and was very picky, I am very happy with what I bought. I believe it when they say the bugs have been worked out and QA is solid.

I have some assorted rounds kicking around and got some HSM bear and cowboy rounds to try too, I am going to sight it in with the bear loads since that will be this rifles primary duty.
 
My Remlin 1895GS with the Wild West Guns retrofits and Brownells cowboy action spring kit is great.
Fantastic trigger and accuracy.
One ragged 5-shot hole at 100 yds.
Woodleigh 405 grain weldcore over IMR-3031in WW case, CCI-200 primer.
With Remlins you have to check them close before buying but there are good ones (and bad ones).
Remlin quality is consistently inconsistent from gun to gun.

I sold my Henry Big Boy All Weather in 44 mag to fund my Remlin 1895GS.
Totally unimpressed by the Henry.
A big clunky way over priced thing with so-so accuracy and front end loading.
The old Rossi 92 I once owned was a lot cheaper lighter and more accurate.
Henry is the cheap suit of leverguns ... more :bsFlag: and media hype than gun.
 
I’m a jm purist myself but I didn’t expect to ever find a 45-70 stp. I didn’t want the sbl and cutting the barrel on a jm stamped xlr then extending the mag tube wasn’t up my alley either. Plus it wouldn’t give me a 16.5” barrel. When I heard they were releasing the trapper again this spring I went on the hunt for one and got on a dealers radar for when his first one was delivered. He checked it out and sent me pictures, everything looked good so I bought it. It got into my greedy little hands in late April and I went over it with intentions of sending it back if it wasn’t all but perfect. It’s still here, besides the serial number and change of stainless finish it’s just as nice as any JM stamped gun I’ve owned. I polished the internals as I do every Marlin but there was very little to clean up. It shoots great, the action is slick, no sharp edges or poor machining anywhere, sights are straight and useful and it’s a very handy gun at that length. I put a stainless loading gate and end cap on her and have been waiting for a grey laminate stock. I had a supplier of the Marlin brand laminate stocks but drug my feet ordering one and now they’re sold out and waiting for more. One of these days I’ll get some new furnature on her as I’m not a fan of the black stock.
If the price is to high to justify that’s a personal issue, not the guns. If you could be happy with a 18” tube you could buy the jm xlr in the classifieds, chop the barrel, throw on a full length mag tube, big loop lever (if it turns your crank), some skinner sights and have a jm gun but it’ll cost more then $1200 by the time your finished.
I’m happy with the remlin, I just avoid looking at the serial number and reflecting on what it’s not. Between it and my jm stamped 338 Marlin express I’ve got all my lever bases covered. I sold the jm stamped guide guns and 336’s and will just run this pair.
