Looking over the small cartridge collection that belonged to a late friend and there is a 303 British case marked VPT 40 which I believe to be Finnish. Was this ammo sold here? I've never seen any.

Quite a lot was sold here in the early 1960s, repacked and rebulleted by Cogswell & Harrison. Sometimes you would find BPD (Italian - some of it even wartime, most 1951) in the same box.

Sold for 15 to 20 cents a shot, compared to 25 or 26 cents a shot for Dominion.

Came packed in boxes of 10 (Kynoch repacks for C&H) or 15, too, so a "full box" was a lot less $$ than a box of Dominion.

For the guy who fired 2 rounds a year - 1 to sight, 1 to burn their tags - it was enough.

And there used to be a lot of those guys.

Work was hard, hours were long, money was tight..... and NOBODY wasted ammo.

Too many memories of the Depression (when nobody could afford a box of shells) and then the War (when there was no ammo to buy).

If you had given some of those guys a 440-round box, he would still have two-thirds of it left. Serious.

This was all sold by Interarms who owned Cogswell & Harrison at the time.

I don't think it was rebulletted/repacked by Kynoch, unless someone can show some evidence of this. I believe it was probably done in Europe, perhaps by Lapua.

pw58 - What is the headstamp on your Ukranian 7.7mm please?

I had a box years ago, it had been bought by my father - had two rounds consumed after several years of hunting. Needless to say he went through the depression and the war... I recall it said on the box something like "regulated for Parker Hale and Sandhurst rifles"

Thanks. it is not Ukranian but Yugoslav, made by Privi Partizan (PPU). Very common here in the UK.
